“…The problems reported have included stress in the mother-child relationship, 1 restlessness and fidgetiness, 2 destructive behavior, 2 frequent disobedience, 2 impaired task orientation in the classroom, 2-4 inattention, short attention span and/or distractibility, 2,4 -6 attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, 7,8 dependence, 2,3 restricted social interaction, 9 suboptimal social behavior, 6 unpopularity with other children, 2 and behavior problems. 10 On the other hand, other investigators have found no significant associations between persistent or recurrent otitis media early in life and measures of attention, 11,12 cooperation, 11 or behavior, [12][13][14] or the presence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, 15 later in childhood. Unfortunately, the studies forming the basis for these various reports have all lacked or been deficient in one or more of the following key features: prospective design; representative study population; avoidance of selection bias; adequate sample size; accurate ascertainment of the presence or absence of otitis media; well grounded assessment measures; and acknowledgment of the distinction between association and causality.…”
