The Psychological, Educational and Auditory Sequelae of Early, Persistent Secretory Otitis Media

Abstract: Previous studies have suggested an association between chronic middle ear disorders due to secretory otitis media and adverse effects on auditory, educational and psychological development in children. Experimental design of such studies has often been poor. In this study, attempts were made to control extraneous variables more rigorously, using matched pairs. A group of children (n = 10) without current hearing problems but with a history of recurrent early secretory otitis media, aged 7-11 yrs, were compared… Show more

“…They concluded that well-managed OME appears to have no permanent implications for auditory language learning. Webster, Bamford, Thyer, and Ayles (1989) came to a similar conclusion, as they could not demonstrate any significant differences between performance of children with a history of recurrent early OME and normal controls on several auditory, psychological and educational measures.…”

“…In most previous studies using similar test procedures (Brandes & Ehinger, 1981;Hoffman-Lawless et al, 1981;Jerger et al, 1983;Pillsbury et al, 1991;Webster et al, 1989;Welsh et al, 19831, cases and controls were selected on the basis of retrospectively collected OME data and therefore subject to recruitment biases. The current data might therefore give a more reliable impression of the association between OME and some aspects of auditory perception at school age.…”

“…Although the failed audiometry assessments do not mean that these children satisfy the diagnostic criteria for OME, it does suggest that as a group they would be at increased risk of such problems which may contribute to learning difficulties7 8 and as such would warrant aggressive detection and treatment.…”
