Chromosome numbers and biogeography of the genusScutellariaL. (Lamiaceae)

Abstract: A survey on chromosome counts of different sections belonging to the genus Scutellaria L. (Lamiaceae) throughout the world is presented and the relationships between chromosome data of its sections and their biogeography are also discussed here. In addition, meiotic chromosome numbers of 20 populations belonging to eight species growing in Iran, namely S. tomentosa (2n = 2x = 22), S. theobromina (2n = 2x = 22), S. araxensis (2n = 2x = 22), S. platystegia (2n = 2x = 22), S. nepetifolia (2n = 2x = 22), S. farsis… Show more

“…The chromosome number 2 n = 22 is known for the most of taxa in the section Lupulinaria . Therefore, x = 11 is the prevailing basic chromosome number in the section and x = 8, x = 9 and x = 10 are less frequent (Ranjbar & Mahmoudi ). There is a strong correlation between its geographic distribution and chromosome numbers.…”

“…Full descriptions of all species of the section Lupulinaria in Iran are presented. This article follows previous studies conducted on taxonomical and cytological researches in the Lamiaceae family in Iran (Ranjbar & Mahmoudi , 2015; Ranjbar & Pakatchi 2014; Ranjbar et al. , 2015a, b, 2016, 2017a, b).…”

“…We also discuss some systematic and evolutionary aspects of the genus in the light of the molecular and cytogenetic data, the relationships between geographical distribution and chromosome numbers in relation to levels of ploidy and chromosome base numbers, and make comparisons with some of the different taxonomic levels. This article follows previous studies conducted on flora of Iran (Ranjbar and Mahmoudi 2013;Ranjbar and Pakatchi 2014;.…”

“…Knowledge of CNs in plants is continuously increasing: just in the last year, several studies were published with massive CN data (Chung et al 2013;Dolatyari et al 2013;Kaplan et al 2013;Krahulcova et al 2013;Kuo 2013;Malik and Gupta 2013;Moyetta et al 2013;Ranjbar and Mahmoudi 2013;Wang et al 2013;Zaveska Drabkova 2013;Correia-da-Silva et al 2014;Rani, Jeelani, et al 2014;. The direct insertion of such data in online and constantly updated databases would much benefit the scientific community.…”
