All human communication involves the use of signs. By following a mutually shared set of signs and rules, meaning can be conveyed from one entity to another. Cartographic semiology provides such a theoretical framework, suggesting how to apply visual variables with respect to thematic content. However, semiotics does not address how the choice and composition of such visual variables may lead to different connotations, interpretations, or judgments. The research herein aimed to identify perceived similarities between geometric shape symbols as well as strategies and processes underlying these similarity judgments. Based on a user study with 38 participants, the (dis)similarities of a set of 12 basic geometric shapes (e.g., circle, triangle, square) were examined. Findings from cluster analysis revealed a three-cluster configuration, while multidimensional scaling further quantified the proximities between the geometric shapes in a two-dimensional space. Qualitative and quantitative content analyses identified four strategies underlying the participants’ similarity judgments, namely visual, affective, associative, and behavioral strategies. With the findings combined, this research provides a differentiated perspective on shape proximities, cognitive relations, and the processes involved.

Haritaların farklı alanlarda kullanılması ile birlikte geniş bir kullanıcı kitlesi oluşmuştur. Kullanıcıların amacı, ihtiyaçları, eğitim seviyesi, yaşı ve bilişsel seviyesi farklılık göstermektedir. Haritalar, kullanıcıların farklı özellikleri ve istekleri dikkate alınarak tasarlandığında etkin ve amacına uygun olarak kullanılabilir. Özellikle temel eğitimde öğrenciler tarafından kullanılan haritaların özenle tasarlanması gerekmektedir. Bu kapsamda, kartografların, çocuk kullanıcıların bilişsel gelişim düzeylerine uygun haritaların üretilmesi ve eğitime kazandırılması kapsamında önemli görev ve sorumlulukları vardır. Bu amaçla yazarlar tarafından eğitimin ilk kademesine yönelik "İlk Okul için Türkiye Atlası" adıyla atlas tasarımı ve üretimi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu makalede atlas projesi kapsamında tasarlanan haritaların, harita içerikli konuların öğrenilmesindeki katkısı incelenmiştir. Atlas kapsamında ilkokul müfredatına uygun olarak içerik hazırlanmış, belirlenen konular için Türkiye haritaları tasarlanmıştır. Atlas tasarımının ve basımının tamamlanmasıyla birlikte farklı nitelikte dört okulda 421 4. Sınıf (9-10 yaş), 73 3. Sınıf (8-9 yaş) olmak üzere toplamda 494 öğrenciyle atlasın kullanımına, okunup algılanmasına ve harita bilgilerinin öğretilmesine katkısını belirlemeye yönelik bir araştırma yapılmıştır. Araştırma kapsamında öğrencilere uygulanan ön test ve son test sonucunda yapılan değerlendirmede atlas kullanımı ile ortalama %40 oranında öğrencilerin öğrenme becerisine katkı sağlandığı görülmüştür.

The main purpose of this study was to assess children"s skill in using a simple map. The study was conducted among 262 children (141 girls and 121 boys), aged between 61-78 months (average 71 months), attending to 4 public pre-schools in Istanbul, Turkey. The simple map skills (requiring mental rotation and understanding spatial relation) of the participants were tested through five different experimental trials. Children"s skills in using simple maps were analyzed by age, gender, and children"s performances in different experimental conditions. The data were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. It was found that children"s performance in the experiments did not vary by gender. Likewise, their performance did not vary by age. However, there were significant differences in children"s performances in the five different experimental conditions. According to findings, children were more successful in trial 1 which is requiring the understanding of spatial relations compared to the trial 2 and 3 which are requiring mental rotation. Finally results are discussed in terms of variables which may lead to the researchers and educators working on spatial abilities of children.
