Chemico-Biological Profiling of Blumea lacera (Burm.f.) DC. (Family: Asteraceae) Provides New Insights as a Potential Source of Antioxidant, Cytotoxic, Antimicrobial, and Antidiarrheal Agents

Abstract: Blumea lacera (Burm.f.) DC., popular for its traditional use in different diseases, was employed in phytochemical and biological investigations. The chemical studies led to the isolation of acyclic diterpene-phytol (1) along with two fatty acids-linolenic acid (2) and oleic acid (3). All the structures were determined by 1H NMR spectroscopic analysis and first time reported from this plant. Different fractions of crude methanol extract were subjected to antioxidant, cytotoxicity, antimicrobial, and antidiarrhe… Show more

“…Meanwhile, some plants specifically contain more antioxidants 24 . Plants have pharmacological effects on humans due to the production of some chemical substances, among these compounds are phenolic compounds, alkaloids and flavonoids, which are also known as secondary metabolites 25 , 26 . Medicinal plants can be used in the prevention or treatment of some diseases due to their antioxidant and phenolic compounds 27 .…”

“…The experiment was conducted in accordance with the FELSA (Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations) criteria. All of the studies were carried out in accordance with the institutional ethical committee’s approved procedures for the maintenance and utilization of laboratory animals [ 72 ]. The Ethical Review Committee of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka, Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh, issued its consent under the approval number Fa.Ph.E/002-A/22 prior to performing animal investigations.…”

“…To examine whether the plant extracts might scavenge free radicals from 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), a total of 2.0 mL of a plant extract solution at various concentrations (ranging from 500 g/mL to 0.977 g/mL) was combined with 3.0 mL of a DPPH methanol solution (20 g/mL). The antioxidant activities of the plant extract were evaluated by comparing its ability to decolorize a purple-colored DPPH methanol solution to that of ascorbic acid (ASA) [ 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 , 76 , 77 ]. …”

“…In India's Konkan region, the herb is utilized to ward against parasites like fleas [8][9][10]. In the homeopathic system, it is prescribed for headaches, enuresis, neuralgia, and coughing brought on by colds [11][12][13][14]. The current study looked into the environmentally friendly production and characterization of iron and copper oxide nanoparticles using root extract from Blumea lacera, and evaluated the antibacterial efficacy of these nanoparticles against bacterial infections in humans.…”
