High refractive index and transparent materials are useful in various technical domains, ranging from energy sector to microelectronics. This work deals with polymer composites prepared by embedding small amounts of barium titanate in hydroxypropyl cellulose matrix. Optical transparency of the composite films varies in agreement with polymer doping level. Light dispersion in the prepared composites allowed evaluation of specific parameters, which are related to the sample structural order and possible optical transitions. Conductivity of the composites is increased due to ceramic particle addition in the polymer. Dielectric studies reveal that the prepared materials are suitable for electric energy storage applications.

We report the synthesis and practical application of a novel scavenger for precious metals. The scavenger was prepared from cellulose filter paper with grafted chains of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) modified with a novel ligand group of N -methyl-2-hydroxyethylcarbamothioate moieties, introduced by the reaction with O -1-mercapto-3-phenoxypropan-2-yl N -methyl-2-hydroxyethylcarbamothioate. Batch experiments were performed to evaluate the capability of the scavenger in ranges of pH and acid concentration as well as to determine the kinetics and isotherm models. The scavenger was found to adsorb only Ag(I), Pd(II), and Au(III) from an aqueous media in the presence of coexisting ions of different bases and precious metals at wide ranges of pH and acid concentration. The adsorption rates fit a pseudo-second-order kinetic equation, and the adsorption reached equilibrium within 60 min. The isotherm studies indicated that the obtained data were a good fit with the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Ag(I), Pd(II), and Au(III) were 126.95, 124.67, and 230.67 mg g –1 , respectively. Regeneration experiments indicated that the adsorbent maintained 97% of its initial efficiency even after five adsorption/desorption cycles. The scavenger was effectively utilized to recover Ag(I), Pd(II), and Au(III) from an aqua regia solution of waste printed circuit boards.

Nanotechnology has become an important part of industrial construction, especially in concrete structural materials. Additionally, waste is a severe environmental problem when using paper can impact waste caused by waste. The inner nanocellulose is sourced from paper waste and then synthesized using natrium hydroxide (NaOH) and natrium hypochlorite (NaClO). Nanocellulose from waste paper was synthesized with a 5%, 10%, and 15% NaOH solution and a 2% NaClO solution with variations in heating time (2 hours, 4 hours, and 6 hours) at a temperature of 125C. The physical, chemical, and microstructural properties were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The XRD results show a higher amorphous percentage after chemical synthesis. A 15% concentration heated for 6 hours, resulted in 79.68% amorphous content, and the lowest amorphous percentage in 5% NaOH with a heating duration of 4 hours, resulting in 63.69% amorphous content. Conversely, if added, acid can reduce the amorphous content and increase the crystal structure. The results of the FT-IR analysis show that treatment using NaOH and NaClO can remove lignin and hemicellulose structures in cellulose fibers. The SEM results show that the size of the structure is smoother and cleaner after treatment with NaOH and NaClO. The results of the EDX test show that with the NaOH and NaClO treatment, the chemical content was close to the chemical content of OPC. Thus, nanocellulose can be used as a substitute for some cement materials in concrete mixtures.
