Chemical Composition of Cinnamomum verum Leaf and Flower Essential Oils and Analysis of Their Antibacterial, Insecticidal, and Larvicidal Properties

Abstract: Cinnamomum verum is widely used in traditional medicines, and the different parts of the plant, such as bark, leaves, and flowers, are used for essential oil production. The present study compared the chemical composition of the essential oil of C. verum extracted from the leaves and flowers. In addition, efficacy of these essential oils against the two common pests Sitophilus oryzae and Callosobruchus maculatus was also evaluated. The results indicated the presence of cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, caryophyllene, a… Show more

“…Phytocompounds, which are functional components found in plants, have potent chemopreventive properties. Literature searches have been carried out to pinpoint the phytocompounds found in the selected plants, and we make a list of them 14–16 . The PubChem archive (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, viewed on 11 November 2022) provided the canonical SMILES for the list of phytocompounds (Table S1).…”

“…Clinical isolates of Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Listeria monocytogenes) and Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, and Shigella boydii) were propagated in a nutrient broth at 37 °C for 24 h before being tested for antibacterial activity but tested isolates for antifungal activity were Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans which were cultivated in potato dextrose broth for 48 hours at 28 °C. To determine the antimicrobial activity of the test substances, the diameters of the zone of inhibition in millimeters was measured using a modified Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method (Narayanankutty et al, 2021a;Narayanankutty et al, 2021b). Filter discs soaked with 10 > l of sterilized water served as a negative control for antimicrobial activity, while standard discs of Gentamycin (antibacterial agent) and Nystatin (antifungal agent) served as positive controls.…”
