Chemical Composition and the Potential of Lavandula angustifolia L. Oil as a Skin Depigmentant

Abstract: Finding non-invasive skin depigmenting agentsrepresent an important goal of cosmetic research and industry. It is now admited that Tyrosinase inhibitor substances could be the most efficient molecules in this field because Tyrosinase is the key enzyme in the melanogenesis process. In the pathology of macular skin hyperpigmentations it can mention aesthetic problems such as: melasma gravidarum, pigmentation of aged skin, photosensibilisation, hepatic disfunctions and post-inflammatory residual pigmentation. “…An increased level of melatonin in the skin can lead to skin pigmentation disorders, such as age spots or melasma. 41,42 Anti-tyrosinase activities have also been reported for the essential oils from Origanum vulgare, 13 Chenopodium botrys, 39 the fresh and dry fruits of Myoporum insulare, 43 Lavandula angustifolia, 44 the aerial parts of Beta vulgaris, 45 Ocimum basilicum, 46 and Piper magnibaccum. 47 The inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase can be used to manage blood glucose and to protect against diabetes mellitus, which is a major public health problem in every part of the world.…”

“…The products used in cosmetic formulations are constantly diversifying as a result of researches in the field, which combine the healing and prevention of many skin conditions with the use of natural products such as vegetable extracts and essential oils [9,18,19]. Research and innovation in this field, as well as in pharmaceutical and environmental fields [20,21] have become necessary, especially nowadays when physical, chemical, and environmental aggressions on the skin cause increasing incidence of skin cancers [22,23].…”
