Chemical and morphological characterization of Allium tuncelianum (Amaryllidaceae) and its antioxidant and anticholinesterase potentials

Abstract: Alzheimer’s disease is the main reason for dementia, which increases with age. Cholinesterase inhibition and antioxidant potentials of extracts and essential oils from bulbs of A. tuncelianum (Kollmann) Özhatay & al., an endemic species to Tunceli (easthern Turkey), were evaluated. The fraction extracted of ethyl acetate had the highest phenolics level, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, and thiobarbituric acid antioxidant capacity. Also, the ethyl acetate fraction presented the highest acetylcholinesterase (1… Show more

“…In reference to all the compiled literature, we observed that the IC 50 results were presented in several formats, in particular to the units of measurement. Among the units that were reported included mg gallic acid equivalents/g [ 64 , 76 ], percentage [ 65 , 74 ], mg/mL or mg/L [ 26 , 67 , 68 , 73 , 75 ], μm [ 69 ], and µg/mL [ 18 , 70 , 71 , 72 ]. This diversity, however, was considered troublesome because direct comparison among studies with different measurement units is not possible without conversion.…”

“…The pathophysiology of AD is not yet completely resolved, however aging is currently recognized as a key factor that activates several neurodegenerative pathways resulting in loss of neuronal cells (Karakaya et al, 2019a;Magalingam et al, 2018). Hallmarks of AD include β-amyloid (Aβ) proteins aggregation to senile plaques, τ-protein hyperphosphorylation, neurofibrillary tangles, low level of ACh, neuroinflammation, dendritic pathology, etc.…”
