La inflamación es la reacción local del tejido conjuntivo vascularizado a la agresión. El tratamiento tradicional para este tipo de reacciones incluye la administración sistémica o tópica de los fármacos antiinflamatorios no esteroideos (AINES), como la bencidamina. Los resultados de estudios preclínicos sugieren que la planta Pisidium guineense Sw, comúnmente conocida como guayabo agrio es útil para tratar diversas patologías, como las afecciones inflamatorias. Sin embargo, no se hallaron investigaciones sobre el efecto antiinflamatorio de esta especie vegetal en la mucosa bucal, por lo que se planteó determinar el efecto antiinflamatorio de Psidium guineense Sw como alternativa al tratamiento de la inflamación en cavidad bucal de ratas BIOU: Wistar. Se realizó un estudio experimental en el que se utilizaron 112 ratas machos distribuidas en ocho grupos, a las cuales se les indujo la inflamación mediante el test orofacial de la formalina inyectando solución de formalina al 5% en la Almohadilla Interna del Labio Inferior (AILI) de las ratas y se les aplicó por vía tópica gel de P. guineense Sw, gel placebo o ungüento de bencidamina, antes o después de inducir la inflamación. Se determinó el volumen de la AILI y se realizó el estudio histopatológico de muestras de este tejido. El análisis estadístico de los resultados demostró que la formalina induce una respuesta inflamatoria en la AILI, en comparación con la inyección de agua destilada (t de student, p<0,05). La administración del gel de Psidium guineense Sw, de manera preventiva y curativa produjo efecto antiinflamatorio, disminuyendo el volumen de la AILI (ANOVA, p<0,05), y la cantidad de infiltrado inflamatorio; la bencidamina solo ejerció efecto antiinflamatorio curativo. Se concluye que el gel de Psidium guineense SW posee un potencial terapéutico como alternativa para prevenir y tratar la inflamación.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic and debilitating condition that affects a significant number of individuals worldwide. Unfortunately, the currently available therapeutic approaches often yield unsatisfactory results and may be accompanied by harmful side effects. A medicinal plant called Psidium glaziovianum Kiaersk has potential benefits in the treatment of this condition due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. In this study, our objective was to investigate the potential therapeutic effects of P. glaziovianum essential oil (PgEO) in alleviating arthritis symptoms in mice induced by Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA). The effect of P. glaziovianum essential oil was evaluated in mice with Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA)-induced arthritis. Edema sizes, macroscopic and radiographic images, cytokine levels, and oxidative stress were evaluated. Administration of PgEO at dosages of 50 and 100 mg/kg effectively prevented CFA-induced osteoarticular changes in arthritic mice, resulting in a significant reduction in joint damage. Additionally, the PgEO treatment exhibited the ability to minimize edema, a common symptom associated with arthritis. Furthermore, PgEO can modulate the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress, both of which play crucial roles in the progression of the disease. In conclusion, our study suggests that PgEO holds great potential as a natural therapeutic agent for rheumatoid arthritis.
