Other investigators have used alkalinization of Simmons basal medium (15,17) or growth with other basal media (5,21) as an index of utilization of such substrates. However, procedures for detecting growth with mineral base media may not be readily applicable in a clinical laboratory, and we found that a significant minority of strains did not grow on Simmons basal medium with acetate, lactate, or pyruvate as substrate (unpublished data).…”
