Characterization of Polyorganosilazane-Derived Hybrid Coatings for the Corrosion Protection of Mild Steel in Chloride Solution

Abstract: Polysilazane (PSZ) have been used for many years as precursors for the development of ceramic materials. Recently, hydrocarbon-substituted polysilazane, which is called organopolysilazane (OPSZ), has been proposed as possible alternative to silanes for the corrosion protection of metals by the sol gel route. In this work, polymethyl(hydro)/polydimethylsilazane-derived coatings were deposited on low-carbon steel for corrosion protection purposes. The effect of the OPSZ precursor concentration (10–40 v/v %) in b… Show more

“…These coatings are synthetized using organic, inorganic, and hybrid approaches. Organic coatings have been demonstrated to provide an effective physical barrier in a variety of aggressive conditions (Deflorian et al, 2005;Abdolahi et al, 2014;Fedel et al, 2019). However, when exposed to anoxic conditions such as those prevailing in seawater or oil and gas pipelines, some of these coatings degrade faster upon exposure to either a bacterial consortium or a specific strain of microbial attack (Enning and Garrelfs, 2014).…”

“…For this purpose, Perhydropolysilazane is being extensively reported in the research as an alternative route for the production of homogeneous, dense, and defect-free silica films from polymeric precursors using simple and economical solution processing techniques [18,19]. A polymer called Perhydropolysilazanes (PHPS) is an inorganic material that consists of silicon and nitrogen atoms in its backbone (-SiH 2 -NH-) and is being used frequently in recent times to produce silica coatings [20,21]. In favorable conditions, perhydropolysilazane produces a homogenous and dense SiO 2 structure, which has a basic characteristic of being impermeable to environmental gases especially moisture and oxygen [22,23].…”
