The concentrations, distribution, possible sources, and potential risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface soils were studied in Kunming, which is situated in a lake basin of the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau. 15 PAHs were analyzed in 40 surface soil samples (0-5 cm layer) collected from six types of land uses in the Kunming urban area. Meanwhile, the potential sources of PAHs in surface soils of Kunming were investigated by PAH composition ratios, isomer ratios, and principal component analysis (PCA). The total concentrations of 15 PAHs ranged from 101.64 to 6,208.25 ng/g (dry weight basis). The concentrations in different land uses increased in an order as: green space (541.43 ng/g) < education area (756.49 ng/g) < business area (810.17 ng/g) < residential area (1,034.36 ng/g) < industrial area (1,166.79 ng/g) < roadside greens (2,146.76 ng/g). The results of sources identification suggested that PAHs in surface soils of the Kunming urban area were greatly affected by combustion activities which came mainly from coal combustion and vehicular traffic. In addition, the toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) were used to estimate benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent concentration in surface soils of Kunming, and the risk level of PAHs in Kunming's urban surface soils was low as a whole.

China Source Profile Shared Service (CSPSS, www.speciate.org.cn), a new database of emission source profiles for particulate matter (PM), has been developed by researchers from Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES). The first release of CSPSS 1.0 consists of comprehensive data from China that reveals the emission profiles of different sources in selected regions. Related source categories include coal-fired boiler, industrial process, fugitive dust, vehicle exhaust emissions, biomass burning and cooking. Compositing methodology and data quality control were applied to create high quality composite profiles of each source category. Statistical measures of correlation coefficient, t-test and and distribution of weighted differences can be used to compare the similarities and differences among individual and composite profiles. In addition, differences between data of SPECIATE and CSPSS were compared. The chemical composition shows special characteristics in different source categories. For example, SO 4 2-and OC mark coal-fired bolier; Ca and Ca 2+ are the most abundant elements in cement production and construction dust emissions; Cl -, K + and K mark biomass burning; several metals such as V, Zn Sn and Pb could be used as tracers for paved road dust while Sr, Ba and Pb marked industrial emissions. The highest abundances of organic matter are observed in cooking emissions. Toxic species such as Cr and As are enriched in PM 2.5 from coal combustion. Distinguished features of source profiles between SPECIATE and CSPSS indicate that the knowledge of local source profiles are needed for further research. This database should better reflect the emission profiles observed in Chinese environment. Sensitivity tests have been conducted to examine the impact of sub-composite source profiles usually used to establish the composite ones. The result shows that the use of sub-composite source profiles of coal combustion dose not impact the apportionment results for biomass burning, but other sources are varying influenced.

Spatial variations were predominantly due to the different strengths of source emission. The total PAHs concentrations at Dongli Monitoring Station (DL) site and Beichen Science and Technology Park (BC) site were higher than those at other four sites in heating period, while those at Meijiang community (MJ) site and Beichen Science and Technology Park (BC) site were higher in no-heating period. Higher PAHs concentrations during heating period and lower concentrations during no-heating period were observed at the six sampling sites, which may be caused by the stronger emissions from stationary combustion sources in heating period and the quicker air dispersion, washout effects, photodegradation and higher percentage in the air in vapor phase in no-heating period. The PAHs concentrations in gaseous phase were predicted with gas/particle partition model, and the BaP and BaP equivalency results indicated that the health risk of gas and particle phase PAHs to human in Tianjin were higher than that in other cities. The contributions from potential sources to PAHs in PM 10 were estimated by the diagnostic ratios between PAHs and principal component analysis (PCA). In whole sampling period, coal combustion was found to the predominant contributor of PM 10 -bound PAHs, followed by vehicles emission and wood combustion.
