Waterlogging is an important constraint of global production of rape. The effects of seed film coating with 0.0075% uniconazole on the growth and physiology was investigated using seedlings from three varieties of rape (Brassica napus L.) subjected to waterlogging. While seed coating with uniconazole had no significant effect on germination percentage during waterlogging stress, it enhanced root vigour, increased root length, root volume and root dry weight. It also significantly enhanced leaf dry weight and ratio of root to shoot, but induced a significant decrease in shoot height and stem dry weight. Seed film coating with uniconazole also significantly increased the activities of the antioxidant enzymes, POD, CAT and SOD, and soluble sugar concentration during waterlogging. Thus, it suggests that seed film coating with uniconazole at a suitable concentration can improve rape seedling growth and increase seedling establishment during waterlogging.
Plant cell walls may play an important role in the uptake and accumulation of heavy metals. This study was undertaken to obtain a better understanding of the role of the root cell walls (RCW) and their subfractions on adsorption of cadmium (Cd) in a promising woody phytoremediation species, Salix jiangsuensis J172. In order to examine how Cd binding was affected by pectin and hemicellulose, RCW were isolated and sequentially fractioned by removing pectin (RCW1), partial removal of hemicellulose (RCW2), and complete removal of hemicellulose (RCW3). The RCW and fractions were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, which suggested decomposition of hemicellulose and a decline in nitrogen content following cell wall isolation and fractionation. The adsorption affinity of Cd increased gradually following the sequential extraction of root cells, suggesting that hemicellulose negatively impacted Cd adsorption, while pectin and cellulose enhanced Cd adsorption. Cd adsorption dynamics and isotherms could be best described by the pseudo-second-order (R>0.99) and Freundlich (R>0.97) models, respectively. Thermodynamic properties (∆G, ∆H, and ∆S), determined using the van't Hoff equation, indicated that while Cd adsorption was endothermic, and spontaneous for RCW2 and RCW3, adsorption was not spontaneous for the root, RCW, and RCW1. The results provide evidence for the importance of the root cell walls in the adsorption of Cd by willow roots.
The concentrations, distribution, possible sources, and potential risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface soils were studied in Kunming, which is situated in a lake basin of the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau. 15 PAHs were analyzed in 40 surface soil samples (0-5 cm layer) collected from six types of land uses in the Kunming urban area. Meanwhile, the potential sources of PAHs in surface soils of Kunming were investigated by PAH composition ratios, isomer ratios, and principal component analysis (PCA). The total concentrations of 15 PAHs ranged from 101.64 to 6,208.25 ng/g (dry weight basis). The concentrations in different land uses increased in an order as: green space (541.43 ng/g) < education area (756.49 ng/g) < business area (810.17 ng/g) < residential area (1,034.36 ng/g) < industrial area (1,166.79 ng/g) < roadside greens (2,146.76 ng/g). The results of sources identification suggested that PAHs in surface soils of the Kunming urban area were greatly affected by combustion activities which came mainly from coal combustion and vehicular traffic. In addition, the toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) were used to estimate benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent concentration in surface soils of Kunming, and the risk level of PAHs in Kunming's urban surface soils was low as a whole.
This study presents the adverse effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WwTPs) on fish health. A study of chronic exposure to WwTPs effluent for 10 months was undertaken in high-back crucian carp (Carassius auratus) during different life stages, covering early-life-stage (ELS), prespawning period, and postspawning period. Condition factor (CF), gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic index (HSI), and plasma vitellogenin (VTG) levels were employed as indicators to assess biological effects of effluent on this gynogenesis species. Meanwhile, some high-back crucian carp were caged in Demonstration Base of Biological Purification for Filter-feeding Fish (hereinafter, Demonstration Base), as WwTPs effluent exposure controls. In the meantime, a depuration study was carried out to determine whether or not the estrogenic effects caused by effluent exposure could be reduced after moving fish into EDCs-free water. CF, HSI, GSI, and plasma Vtg levels of high-back crucian carp caged in Demonstration Base were generally in accordance with seasonal change. Effluent exposure inhibited gonadal growth, reducing GSI in ELS while increasing it around spawning, sharpened liver burdens, increasing HSI, and induced abnormal Vtg expression in juvenile high-back crucian carp, augmenting Vtg concentrations in plasma. Around spawning period, Vtg in high-back crucian carp were mainly induced by endogenous estrogens, and EDCs in effluent had less influence on them. Staying in EDCs-free water for 30 days made high-back crucian carp recover from effects of previous effluent exposure, relieving inhibition of gonadal development and hypertrophy of liver as well as reducing Vtg induced by EDCs in effluent. The results revealed that high-back crucian carp in ELS are more sensitive to WwTPs effluent exposure. Additionally, the depuration study showed a clearance of the estrogenic effects caused by effluent.
The fake center is a common problem of density-based clustering algorithms, especially for datasets with clusters of different shapes and densities. Clustering by fast search and find of density peaks (DPC) and its improved versions often ignore the effect of fake centers on clustering quality. They usually have a poor performance even the actual number of centers are used. To solve this problem, we propose a density peaks clustering based on local minimal spanning tree (DPC-LMST), which generates initial clusters for each potential centers first and then introduce a sub-cluster merging factor (SCMF) to aggregate similar sub-clusters. Meanwhile, we introduce a new strategy of representative points to reduce the size of data and redefine local density ρ i and distance δ i of each representative point. Furthermore, the hint of γ is redesigned to highlight true centers for datasets with clusters of different densities. The proposed algorithm is benchmarked on both synthetic and real-world datasets, and we compare the results with K-means, DPC, and the three state-of-the-art improved DPC algorithms.INDEX TERMS Clustering, density peaks, fake centers, local minimal spanning tree, representative points.
