Among the fruit species cultivated in subtropical climates, quince has productive cultivars with high horticultural potential. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the genetic divergence among quince cultivars through multivariate procedures and to identify cultivars for cultivation in the tropics through selection indices. Twenty-seven productive quince cultivars were grown in a location with a high-altitude tropical climate. The number of fruit, estimated yield, flowering period, number of buds, number of shoots, number of brindles per shoot, shoot length, average fruit weight, fruit length, and fruit diameter were measured. A multivariate principal component analysis (PCA) associated with the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic means (UPGMA) based on Gower distance and Pearson correlation coefficients was used to evaluate genetic divergence. Superior cultivars were defined by the selection index based on the rank summation index and the Z-index. UPGMA grouping indicated there was genetic variability among cultivars and showed that groups that were more dissimilar [e.g., the cultivars Bereckzy and Champion (distance = 0.69)] had the potential to be used in future stages of quince selection. The estimated yield, shoot length, fruit weight and diameter, and flowering period contributed to the maximum variability among quince cultivars. The selection indices identified cvs. Bereckzy, Alaranjado, and Alongado (30, 68, and 73 rank summation index, respectively) as superior, simultaneously considering the evaluated traits with greater potential for cultivation in the tropics.

According to the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Healthcare ABSTRACT Objective: In this study we investigated in vitro antifungal activity of fluconazole, green tea (Camellia sinensis) and quince leaf (Cydonia oblonga) extracts in Candida strains isolated from blood cultures. Methods: Fifty Candida spp were included to study. Camellia sinensis and Cydonia oblonga leaves collected from Rize and Erzurum/Tortum regions were prepared as an extract. Then stock solutions of the extracts and fluconazole powder obtained from the manufacturer were prepared for use in the Broth Microdilution (BMD) method according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) M27 A3 recommendation. Fluconazole minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values obtained from BMD method were evaluated according to CLSI M27 A4 break points. MIC values obtained for Camellia sinensis and Cydonia oblonga were interpreted according to fluconazole break points since there is no break points in the literature. Results: Of the 50 Candida spp. included in the study, 37 (74%) were C. albicans while 13 (26%) were non-albicans species. The most common isolated non-albicans species was C. parapsilosis (14%). For all tested Candida strains MIC 50 and MIC 90 values for fluconazole were found to be 0.125 mg/mL-0.25 mg/mL while they were determined as 0.125 mg/mL-64 mg/mL and 0.125 mg/mL-0.125 mg/mL for green tea and quince leaves, respectively. Conclusion: According to the low MIC values, it is seen that green tea and quince leaf are in vitro effective against Candida species. However, further extensive in vitro and in vivo studies should be done on the possibility that green tea and quince leaf can be used alternatively in the treatment of invasive Candida infections.

The DNA fingerprinting of fruit crops, based on DNA microsatellite markers that are considered to be the key markers for the molecular analysis of germplasm collections, is reviewed. Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) remain the markers of choice for fingerprinting in humans, animals, plants, and other living organisms. This review, that considers 44 fruit species, provides a set of markers that are suitable for profiling accessions and that should make the databases produced in different laboratories more comparable. Every effort has been made to select SSR markers that are robust and easily scorable considering that such analyses are sometimes used in legal cases. The review first describes the basic protocols, procedures, and methods of data analyses; it then describes the fingerprinting of individual species or groups of species, providing a set of SSR markers and appropriate guidance based on the revised literature and on the authors' experience.
