Characterization, biological activities, and authentication of red fruit (Pandanus conoideus Lam) oil

Abstract: Red fruit (Pandanus conoideus Lam) oil (RFO) is one of high value edible oils having many functional advantages for health. P. conoideus is a native plant from Papua province, Republic of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. RFO is good for diets and served as preventive agents for various diseases such as cancer and coronary disease so that RFO can be considered as functional edible oils. Because of its high quality, in Indonesia fats and oils market, RFO has a more expensive price (10-15 times) than other common … Show more

“…Red fruit widely distributed at Papua Island, namely Papua (Indonesia) and Papua New Guinea, having 55–100 cm long, 10–15 cm diameter, and 2–3 kg weight [ 78 ]. RFO is red in color due to high contents of carotenoids and is reported to have several biological activities including treating several degenerative diseases such as cancer, arteriosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, stroke, and diabetes mellitus [ 79 ]. The price of RFO in Indonesian market is 10–15 times higher than common vegetable oils; therefore, RFO is subjected to adulteration by unethical sellers to get economical profit.…”

“…7 In addition, Papuans believe that red fruit could cure degenerative diseases such as cancer, arteriosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and stroke. 8 Red fruit contains high natural antioxidant compounds, including carotene, betacarotene and α-tocopherol. It also contains other compounds such as omega-3, omega-9 and oleic acid which are active compounds that counteract the formation of free radicals in the body.…”

“…Thus, it is of utmost importance to develop a simple, fast, accurate and inexpensive method to accurately measure curcumin. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) [23,24], high performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) [25,26], high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) [27], ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) [28,29], resonance light scattering (RLS) [30], spectrofluorimetry (SF) [31] and capillary electrophoresis (CE) [32] are only some examples of the methods used for measuring curcumin until now. These methods enjoy high accuracy, remarkable sensitivity and desirable selectivity.…”
