Characteristics and outcome of 102 fetuses with fetal cerebral ventriculomegaly: Experience of a university hospital in Turkey

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of associated structural anomalies and the outcome of fetuses with ventriculomegaly. We retrospectively collected 102 cases of antenatally diagnosed ventriculomegaly examined between 2000 and 2008. Ventricular width measurements were 10-12 mm, 12.1-14.9 mm and ≥ 15 mm in 24.5%, 20.6% and 54.9% of the cases, respectively. Associated structural malformations were detected in 77.4% of the fetuses. Mortality rate of fetuses with associated malformations and isola… Show more

“…Corpus callosum anomalies were the most frequently found malformations in our study, as in the previous studies (9,17,(21)(22)(23)(24). In our study, 107 fetuses (70.9%) with "Mild Ventriculomegaly" and 30 (50.6%) with "Moderate Ventriculomegaly" had associated abnormalities.…”

“…We observed better neurodevelopmental outcome for children with isolated SVM in our cohort compared with the literature . Prenatal assessment was complete for all patients with fetal ultrasound, fetal MRI during the third trimester, and amniocentesis to search for any chromosomal anomalies and perform infectious disease screening.…”

“…Generally, the outcome of children with SVM is considered to be poor, but only very few and small retrospective studies have been performed, with a follow‐up ranging between 4 and 48 months (Table ). Reported results are conflicting.…”

“…Upon further review, 23 articles were included in the final analysis [Figure 1]. [4–26] Table 1 lists the number of cases and chromosomal abnormalities of the 17 included studies of conventional chromosome karyotype analysis. Table 2 describes the number of cases and the incremental yield of the eight included studies of CMA in VM.…”
