Characterisation of Polyphenolic Compounds in Viscum album L. and Allium sativum L. extracts

Abstract: There are numerous phytochemicals (isoflavones, flavonoids, catechins, anthocyanins, carotenoids, polyphenols, phenolic acids), which are largely used in the pharmaceutical industry. This research describes the process through which, one can obtain medicinal extracts from mistletoe (Viscum album L.) and garlic (Allium sativum L.) while giving an exact characterisation of the two extracts. The HPLC/MS analysis was employed in order to identify and evaluate the presence of phenolic acids (gentisic acid, chlorog… Show more

“…extract from oak and Phoradendron sp. extract from mesquite and was also reported in V. album from Romania by Trifunschi et al [ 17 ]. In addition, studies conducted with extracts of Phellinus gilvus , Phellinus rimosus , and Phellinus badius by Ayala et al [ 18 ] showed an inhibitory effect against Alternaria alternata and determined the content of phenolic compounds, which presented values of 30.58, 28, and 26.48 mg QE/g equivalent, respectively, which also had results of 50% in inhibiting the growth of this pathogen.…”

“…The optimized extracts showed similar HPLC profiles with minor differences, and both presented diallyl disulfide, allicin, and ferulic acid in their composition ( Figure 4 ). Previous studies confirmed the presence of allicin and diallyl disulfide [ 5 , 31 , 32 , 33 ] between the organosulfur constituents, and the presence of ferulic acid [ 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 ] as one of the major phenolic acids in garlic extracts.…”

“…New flavones from Asian mistletoes, such as lucenin-2, vicenin-2, and stelarin-2, were found [ 46 ]. In V. album from Romania, hyperoside, isoquercitrin, rutin, and luteolin were detected [ 47 ]. Chilean mistletoe leaves showed flavones with high antioxidant activity [ 48 ]; for example, sinensetin.…”
