Mudanças nas características anatômicas e fisiológicas e na produção de óleo essencial de plantas medicinais sob influência de diferentes condições de radiação têm sido evidenciadas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar essas variações em plantas de alfazema-do-Brasil (Aloysia gratissima [Gilles & Hook.] Tronc.) Verbenaceae, crescidas a pleno sol e com 40 e 80% de redução da radiação solar incidente. Para a análise de crescimento, utilizou-se delineamento inteiramente casualizado (DIC), com três níveis de luzes e cinco repetições de três plantas. As análises do teor de clorofila e da anatomia foliar foram realizadas em DIC com três repetições de três plantas e, a análise do óleo essencial, em DIC, com três repetições de cinco plantas, para cada nível de radiação. O nível de 40% de sombreamento foi o melhor no aspecto de crescimento. A matéria seca dos diversos órgãos da planta não diferiu entre os tratamentos com 40% de sombreamento (massa seca total 201 g) e a pleno sol (148 g), ambos significativamente superiores ao tratamento com 80% de sombreamento (68,6 g). Plantas cultivadas a pleno sol apresentaram folhas com epiderme adaxial, parênquima paliçádico, esponjoso e limbo significativamente mais espesso que nos demais tratamentos, enquanto plantas crescidas a 80% de sombreamento apresentaram folhas com a epiderme abaxial significativamente mais espessa. Não houve efeito significativo do sombreamento sobre o teor do óleo essencial, que variou de 2,1 a 2,2%, embora o rendimento de óleo essencial tenha sido significativamente superior nas plantas crescidas em plena luz (0,73 g planta-1) e a 40% de sombreamento (0,88), em relação àquelas crescidas a 80% de sombreamento (0,26). Houve aumento significativo da concentração de clorofila a e b em função da diminuição da intensidade de radiação (20,7 mg de clorofila total por g de massa fresca a pleno sol; e 23,7 e 32,0 com 40 e 80% de sombreamento respectivamente) e uma redução significativa na razão a/b (3,13 a pleno sol e 2,94 e 2,69, a 40 e 80% de sombreamento, respectivamente).

Garlic is a health promoter that has important bioactive compounds. The bioactive extraction is an important step in the analysis of constituents present in plant preparations. The purpose of this study is to optimize the extraction with the best proportion of solvents to obtain total phenolic compounds (TPC) and thiosulfinates (TS) from dried garlic powder, and evaluate the antioxidant activities of the optimized extracts. A statistical mixture simplex axial design was used to evaluate the effect of solvents (water, ethanol, and acetone), as well as mixtures of these solvents, after two ultrasound extraction cycles of 15 min. Results showed that solvent mixtures with a high portion of water and pure water were efficient for TPC and TS recovery through this extraction procedure. According to the regression model computed, the most significant solvent mixtures to obtain high TPC and TS recovery from dried garlic powder are, respectively, the binary mixture with 75% water and 25% acetone and pure water. These optimized extracts presented oxygen radical absorbance capacity. Pure water was better for total antioxidant capacity, and the binary mixture of water–acetone (75:25) was better for DPPH scavenging activity. These optimized extracts can be used for industrial and research applications.

Coumarin (1) and kaurane-type diterpenes are considered the bioactive constituents of Mikania glomerata and M. laevigata, used in Brazil to treat respiratory affective disorders. The seasonal variation of 1, ortho-coumaric acid (2), benzoylgrandifloric acid (3), cinnamoylgrandifloric acid (4), and kaurenoic acid (5) in leaves of both species, cultivated in full sunlight and under shade levels of 40 and 80%, was quantified by HPLC. Compound 2 was detected solely in M. laevigata in concentrations below the limit of quantification. Coumarin was not found in M. glomerata, whereas its concentration reached 0.94±0.24% (w/w) in M. laevigata farmed in summer under 80% shading. Both Mikania species produced higher amounts of kaurane diterpenes when cultivated in plenty of sunlight. Hence, maximum contents of 1 are reached in M. laevigata cultivated under high shading, but with reduced concentrations of 3-5. Conversely, M. glomerata should be cultivated under full sunlight and harvested in winter for highest concentrations of kaurane-type diterpenes.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the yield of calyxes of Hibiscus sabdariffa L, a medicinal plant, at four planting times in Lavras MG. The treatments were four planting times ( th 2002) and a harvest was proceeded when practically there were no developing calyxes, almost at the end of the plant cycle. The numbers of calyxes per plant, the fresh and dry biomasses of calyxes and quality were taken into account. It follows that planting time influenced yield per plant and the fresh and dry biomasses of calyxes, differing from each other by Tukey test at 5%. In October planting, there was a higher yield (2,522kg/ha) with a yield 5.24 as high relative to the planting of the month of January (481 kg/ha). The planting s in the month of November to December showed yields of 1,695 and 1,093 kg/ha of dry calyxes, respectively and in relation to the same months of January, yield was of 3.52 to 2.27 times more. Harvest must be done as soon as the calyxes are ripe in order to preserve quality.Index Terms: Organic farming, calyx, medicinal plant, yield, vinegar plant. RESUMOObjetivou-se avaliar a produtividade de cálices de Hibiscus sabdariffa L., planta medicinal, em quatro épocas de plantio em Lavras M.G. Os tratamentos foram quatro épocas de plantio (18 de outubro; 15 de novembro; 18 de dezembro de 2001 e 15 de janeiro de 2002) e realizada uma colheita quando praticamente não existiam cálices em desenvolvimento, quase no final do ciclo da planta. Foram considerados os números de cálices por planta, as fitomassas frescas e secas dos cálices e a qualidade. Concluiu-se que a época de plantio influenciou o rendimento por planta e as fitomassas frescas e secas dos cálices, diferindo entre si pelo teste de Tukey a 5%. No plantio de outubro, houve maior rendimento (2.522 kg/ha), com produção de 5,24 vezes a mais em relação ao plantio do mês de janeiro (481 kg/ha). Os plantios nos meses de novembro e dezembro tiveram produções de 1.695 e 1.093 kg.ha -1 de cálices secos, respectivamente, e em relação ao mês de janeiro, a produção foi 3,52 e 2,27 vezes a mais.
