Changes in Weight, Nitrogen Accumulation, Respiration and Photosynthesis During Growth and Development of Seeds and Pods of Phaseolus Vulgaris

Abstract: The growth and development of pods and seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris are described by the following parameters: fresh and dry weight, length, ratio of fresh weight to length and nitrogen content. Pod and seed development are independent and sequential. Pod photosynthesis contributes only marginally to pod development, but may be significant in refixing CO2 released in respiration. Pods and seeds do not seem to act simply as competing sinks. Nitrogen accumulation in the seeds begins only when it has ceased in the… Show more

“…3b), we explored the possibility that the drought effect on 14 C translocation from leaves into pods occurred before seed filling started. Hence, we analysed 14 C‐starch partitioning during pre‐filling stages; that is, using 1‐ and 2‐week‐old pods, which correspond to developmental stages where seeds are developing, before the beginning of the accumulation of reserves in the embryo (Oliker et al. 1978; Dejardin et al.…”

“…Two types of experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of terminal drought on reproductive structures (pods) at filling and pre‐filling stages (Oliker, Poljakoff‐Mayber & Mayer 1978). To evaluate the effect of drought on seed filling stage, the plants were irrigated to field capacity until 4 d after flowering when watering was halted; subsequently, the plants were harvested when most of the pods were at the early (56 d after seeding, DAS), intermediate (60 DAS) or late stage (64 DAS) of seed filling, as indicated.…”

“…The study was undertaken to investigate possible relationships between the sucrose-cleaving enzymes AI, SS and neutral invertase (NI), and the sink processes of carbon import, growth in size and accumulation of dry weight during bean fruit development. Temporal (DPA) and spatial (pod versus seed) patterns were studied in Phaseolus vulgaris fruits, whose development also has been characterized in other types of studies (Geiger et al, 1989;Loewenberger 1955;Oliker, Poljakoff-Mayber & Mayer 1978;Sage & Webster 1990;Walbot, Clutter & Sussex 1972). The activities of AI and SS differed between pods and seeds and also changed during development of each structure.…”
