Changes in precipitation extremes in Brazil (Paraná River Basin)

Abstract: Abstract. This research was aimed at addressing aspects related to variation in the amount of precipitation during the period from 1986 to 2011, in the Paraná River Hydrographical Basin, Brazil, for 32 meteorological stations using 11 climate indices created by the ETCCDI (Expert Team, ET, on Climate Change Detection and Indices, ETCCDI). The daily rainfall data were organized in spreadsheets, which were subjected to an intense quality control and an accurate historical research. For each pluviometric index, w… Show more

“…The greatest difference in rainfall between the Litorânea basin and the other basins selected in this study occurs in the summer, between December and February, when the oceanic influence is intensified by warming of the surface water, and rainfall on the continent is reduced by the orography of the Serra do Mar. Conversely, during the winter months, mainly between June and August, the more frequent passage of the Atlantic polar system provides wider rain systems, which are due to its direction and dimensions, as indicated by Borsato and Mendonça [32], Cardozo et al [33] and Zandonadi et al [34].…”

“…It was important to detect the outliers in the observations because the incorrect values due to erroneous transcriptions of the daily data could be identified by the relationship between the outliers and the maximum values of the daily precipitation in the observations [31,34]. Then, to control the quality of the data strictly, we removed the stations missing observations for more than 10 consecutive days in the rainy season (i.e., April to September) [35,36].…”

“…A redução do volume pluviométrico e do NDC no período de outono e inverno é atribuída à menor participação dos sistemas atmosféricos intertropicais e a participação majoritária dos sistemas atmosféricos frontais na formação de eventos pluviométricos (BALDO, 2006;SILVA et al, 2006;ZANDONADI, 2013;ZANDONADI et al, 2015). A figura 9 representa a variação espacial do índice de erosividade para a escala sazonal.…”
