Change of Subjective Visual Function in First-Eye Cataract Patients When the Rate of Surgery Increases in a Population

Abstract: A higher frequency of first-eye cataract surgery in a population was before surgery associated with an on average better VA of the eye to be operated, a less perceived visual disability regarding some common vision-dependent activities, a lower percentage of mature cataracts and thus earlier surgery. Consequently, a higher rate of surgery would likely be associated with a lesser amount of visual impairment because of cataract in the population.

“…As expected, first eye cataract surgery had a positive effect on visual functioning. The present study confirmed previous findings that visual functioning improved for those individuals who underwent cataract surgery 10,32 , 44–46 . Vision‐related disability in older people showed significant improvement post‐surgery as expected.…”

“…Individuals in the intervention group had fewer difficulties with overall disability ( P = 0.0001) after surgery compared with the control group. Similar findings have been reported for improvements in overall disability after cataract surgery 32,45 , 46 . Few investigators have examined the impact of cataract surgery on specific domains of disability and whether individuals report varying degrees of change of ability depending on the type of vision‐related activity.…”

“…"When I watch television I think it is dull, but actually it is colourful." This corresponds with Moenestam andWachtmeister's (2002:1087) description of visual impairment as the "…visual inability to read, to watch television or to orientate one-self in unfamiliar surroundings…". Welch (1987:155-159) is of the opinion that the ecological perspective (Germain & Gitterman, 1980:77-79) provides an appropriate cognitive framework for social work in general and for the South African context.…”
