“…In comparison, less is known about the rates of anxiety in older adults with visual impairment (Evans et al, 2007; Li et al, 2011). In the context of eye disease, both depression and anxiety present significant impediments to patient recovery and rehabilitation (Tolman et al, 2005; Walker et al, 2006), increase levels of disability (Brody et al, 2001; Banerjee et al, 2008), and ultimately represent a social and economic health burden on the community Lotery et al, 2007; World Health Organization, 2012. Thus, a clear understanding of the contributors to depression and anxiety in older adults with visual impairment has implications for treatment and public health.…”

“…Several studies have examined the impact of cataract surgery on depression (McGwin et al, 2003; Mitsonis et al, 2006; Walker et al, 2006; Freeman et al, 2009; Meuleners et al, 2013) and anxiety (Mitsonis et al, 2006; Meuleners et al, 2013). Depressive symptoms in cataract patients awaiting surgery are higher in those with poorer visual acuity in the eye to be operated on (Freeman et al, 2009).…”

“…8 Andere onderzoekers zagen een verbeterd welbevinden na cataract operatie. 9 Ruim 80% van alle blindheid in de wereld is goed te behandelen of had met tijdige interventie voorkomen kunnen worden ('vermijdbare blindheid'). Wanneer nieuwe gegevens beschikbaar zijn worden die voor het jaar waarvoor zij gelden ingevoerd en vanaf dat jaar meegenomen in alle berekeningen.…”

“…It is possible that some people may have experienced a change in their visual function after the second assessment. A cognitive assessment was not conducted, and cognitive ability is a well-known confounder in research with an older population 44,4852. A large number of participants (40%) were unable to return to the hospital to complete the second assessment, which may have increased the apparent effectiveness of cataract surgery.…”
