Change of extreme rainfall indexes at Ebro River Basin

Abstract: Abstract. Extreme rainfall events are a serious concern for regional hydrology and agriculture in the Ebro River Basin. Repeated anomalous rainfall in recent decades has had a devastating impact on this region, both socially and economically. Some studies developed in Italy and USA have shown that there is a change in seasonal patterns and an increasing frequency of extreme rainfall events, whereas other studies have pointed out that no global behaviour could be observed in monthly trends due to high climatic … Show more

“…In this sense, it is interesting to note that since the late 1970s the teleconnection pattern index NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation)-which measures the variation in the pressure difference between the Azores and Iceland-experienced a clear growth generally reaching positive values after that date, whereas in the preceding decades it usually took negative values. Several studies show that this index is negatively correlated with the intensity of the rainfall collected in the Ebro River Basin [17,60]. In addition, this relationship has been found using the mean monthly rainfall within the watershed with the data of the present study.…”

“…We considered the NAO index, the WeMOi and finally defined a new index, IBEI, which focuses on the dominant flow pattern over the Iberian Peninsula. A similar study was conducted by Valencia et al (2012) The CDFs for these indexes (Fig. 8) reveal a few interesting features linked to the most favorable flows for the generation of extreme precipitation episodes in the region.…”

“…The NAO is described as a meridional oscillation of atmospheric mass with centres of action near the Azores high and the Icelandic low. General effects of the NAO on precipitation, with positive (negative) correlations in the northern (southern) part of Europe in winter, have been documented in many studies (Valencia et al ., ; Irannezhad et al ., ; Pokorná and Huth, ). The line of zero correlation is located approximately at 50°N in western and central Europe and more northwards in eastern Europe.…”
