Challenges in supply chain redesign for the Circular Economy: a literature review and a multiple case study

Abstract: Despite companies face several challenges when redesigning their supply chain for the Circular Economy, the literature lacks a systematisation of such challenges and of the ways to overcome them. Through a systematic literature review, this paper identifies and systematises 24 challenges that may hamper a supply chain redesign for the Circular Economy. Sixteen among these challenges are well known from research in related topics. On the contrary, the remaining eight are relatively new or take a different relev… Show more

“…Awareness of user-behaviour is one among seven categories identified by Bressanelli, Perona and Saccani (2018) as being a major challenge for re-designing the supply chain. According to Esposito, Tse and Soufani (2016) in the Harvard Business Review, even with such customer input (post-purchase and use), the entire burden of recycling cannot be placed on the consumer.…”

“…In a linear economy, the supply chains are the ones that extract, use, and dispose, while in a circular economy, it is the supply chains that reduce, reuse, and recycle. In a circular economy, materials are constantly circulating in many different supply chains and never have to become waste (Bressanelli et al 2018). The biggest logistical challenges in a circular economy are the unpredictability of the flow of materials, their low financial value, and diversity of goods properties (Batista et al 2019).…”

“…In those studies, the authors made an effort to highlight how the optimal decision changes according to game structure. We refer to recent review articles [2,[40][41][42] on CLSC for detailed discussion. The environmental and operational measures of a CLSC network is another important aspect, where how to reduce number of vehicles to be used and the resulting carbon emissions, as well as the impact of re-manufacturing on environment, are studied extensively under an integer programming framework.…”
