Cellular immunity in Wilms' tumour and neuroblastoma

Abstract: Lymphocytotoxicity against tumour-specific antigens has been examined using cultures of 11 ncwroblastomas and I I Wilms' tumours. The reactivity of lymphocytes from patients with neuroblastomas, Wilm's tumour, other tumours and from normal individuals was examined. Iir both systems tumour-specific lymphocytotoxicity was demonstrated in both autochthonous and allogeneic combinations. Cross-reactivity wus observed between Wilms' tumour and hypernephromu but not with respcct to other tumours,

“…It is more or less accepted today that a cellmediated tumor immunity can be detected in vitro when studying human patients with a variety of neoplastic diseases (Hellstrom et al, 1968(Hellstrom et al, , 1970(Hellstrom et al, , 1971aBubenik et al, 1970Bubenik et al, , 1971Diehl et al, 1971;Fossati et al, 1971Fossati et al, ,1972Vanky et al, 1971 ;Nairn et a[., 1971;Levy et al, 1972;O'Toole et al, 1972;de Vries et al, 1972;Kumar et al, 1972). “…Short-term cultures from 17 Wilms' tumours, three normal kidneys and three foetal kidneys were initiated and stored by methods similar t o those described previously (Kumar et al, 1972;Kumar and Taylor, 1975). An established line of normal human skin fibroblasts was kindly provided by our colleague, Dr. D. Scott.…”

“…Immune responses against tumour-specific antigens of Wilms' tumour have been extensively investigated by a variety of techniques. Lymphocyte-recognized antigens have been demmstrated by tumour-cellkilling techniques (Hellstrom et al, 1968(Hellstrom et al, , 1971Diehl et al, 1971;Kumar et al, 1972) and cytoplasmic antigens by immunofluorescence (Kumar and Taylor, 1975). Xenoantisera have also been used to demonstrate specific antigens in Wilms' tumour extracts (Burtin and Gendron, 1973).…”

“…Regression of human osteosarcoma has been described after adaptive and active immunotherapy (Marcove et al 197 1, Marsh et al 1972), and the presence of tumour-specific antigens, capable of evoking both humoral (Lewis et al 1969, Hellstrijm & Hellstrom 1973) and cell-mediated antibody responses (cf. Hellstrom et al 1971, Kumar et al 1972, has been demonstrated in osteosarcoma.…”
