Cattle and sheep develop preference for drinking water containing grape seed tannin

Abstract: Ingestion of small amounts of some types of condensed tannins (CTs) by ruminant livestock can provide nutritional, environmental and economic benefits. However, practical methods are needed to make these tannins more available to ruminant livestock. Results from previous trials with crude quebracho and black wattle tannin indicated that cattle and/or sheep would not preferentially drink water containing these tannins. Therefore, we conducted preference trials to determine if cattle and sheep would learn to pre… Show more

“…The adequate amount of water ingested is essential for the health and productivity of ruminants. However, some factors, such as tannins, may promote water consumption (Kronberg & Schauer, 2013). The highest water intake observed in the 5.2% treatment (44.97 L) probably occurred due to the astringent effects of the cows' mouth in concomitant interactions with tannins and salivary proteins.…”

“…Tannins are usually associated with decreased palatability and, consequently, with an influence on the time spent eating. However, moderate amounts of some types of tannins ingested by ruminants have the potential to improve productivity and dietary protein utilization efficiency in the small intestine, to reduce the negative impact of gastrointestinal parasites, and to reduce urea excretion via urine and methane emission into the environment [4][5][6].…”
