Alumina-supported NiO samples containing up to 20 wt % NiO and calcined at 450 O C for 12 h have been studied by a variety of physicochemlcal techniques: X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and ESCA and Auger spectroscopies. These techniques were used to characterize the nickel species systematically as a function of nickel content. The nature of the nickel species on the surface was also analyzed by Auger and ESCA when the reduction was carried out by hydrogen. The activity has been measured for the decomposition of cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone between 300 and 350 O C , and the results are correlated with the studies in solid-state properties.

Die Abhängigkeit der spezifischen Aktivität bei Metall/Träger‐Katalysatoren von Größe und Gestalt der Metallteilchen wird auf Grund der Topographie verschiedener Gitterebenen an Hand von Modellen diskutiert und mit in der Literatur für spezielle Systeme angeführten Meßergebnissen verglichen.Hiernach sind bei einfachen Reaktionen entweder alle Metalloberflächenatome gleichmäßig katalytisch aktiv (z.B. bei Reaktionen kleiner bzw. symmetrischer größerer Moleküle), oder B5‐Plätze stellen aktive Zentren dar (z.B. bei „top‐side”︁‐Reaktionen sowie Reaktionen gestreckter bzw. unsymmetrischer größerer Moleküle). Demgegenüber ergeben sich keine sicheren Hinweise dafür, daß bei irgendwelchen Reaktionen nur einzelne Kristallebenen eine besonders hohe Aktivität aufweisen.

Compensation effect and its use in catalyst correlations

Catalysts of varying surface properties (e.g. surface area, pore volume and crystallite size) and of varying bulk properties (e.g. metallic radius, heat of formation of oxide and percentage d‐character) were evaluated as catalysts for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Surface properties were varied by studying the following catalysts: unsupported nickel oxide, nickel oxide/α‐alumina, nickel oxide/α‐alumina and nickel oxide/silica‐alumina. The bulk properties were varied by studying the oxide catalysts of different metals such as nickel, chromium, mangenese, cobalt and palladium. The results obtained from this work along with the data obtained from a search of the literature, were correlated using a compensation plot (linear relationship between the activation energy and the logarithm of the frequency factor). General correlations for bulk properties and catalytic activities are presented for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. The use of a “Compensation Effect” for the hydrogenation of ethylene is also discussed.
