-The objective of this paper was to identify alternatives for the chemical handling of weeds that infect wheat, as well as verifying the phytotoxicity of herbicides on the crop. The experiment was carried out in randomized blocks, organized in a factorial design of 2x 13, with four repetitions. The wheat crops were allocated to factor A (Quartzo and Pioneiro) and the herbicides to factor B (iodosulfuron -0,100 kg ha -1 ; imazapic + imazapyr -0,140 kg ha -1 ; clomazone 0,800 L ha -1 ; imazethapyr + imazapic -1,250 L ha -1 ; propanil -6,000 kg ha, plus two controls, one weeded and another one infested. Iodosulfuron, propanil, oxyfluorfen, metsulfuron-methyl, 2,4-D, cyhalofop-p-buthyl, penoxsulam and pyroxsulam cause values inferior to 5.5% of phytotoxicity to wheat crops and, in general, they did not differ from the weeded and infested controls. The greatest phytotoxic effects were caused by imazethapyr + imazapic, clomazone and imazapic + imazapyr on the wheat crops. The application of iodosulfuron, imazethapyr + imazapic, imazapic + imazapyr and pyroxsulam presented elevated control percentage of ryegrass, with rates above 95.5%. Imazethapyr + imazapic, clomazone and imazapic + imazapyr presented the greatest phytotoxicity on the wheat crops. Iodosulfuron, imazethapyr + imazapic, clomazone and imazapic + imazapyr and pyroxsulam showed the best controls for ryegrass. Iodosulfuron presented lower influence on the components of wheat grains yield when compared to the other herbicides. -Imidazolinone herbicides present physicochemical characteristics that allow them to persist longer in environment, with increased chances of soil and water contamination, as well as carryover effects on subsequent crops. Phytoremediation is shown as a promising technique to decontaminate soils polluted by herbicides. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of some winter grown species in removing residuals from soils contaminated with imazethapyr + imazapic and imazapic + imazapyr, using pre-emergence to control weeds in summer grown rice fields. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, with four replications. All species were subjected to herbicide application at different doses. Imazethapyr + imazapic and imazapyr + imazapic were applied at doses of 0.0, 1.0 and 2.0 L ha , respectively, in pre-emergence of the species. Brassica napus and Festuca arundinaceae are not tolerant to herbicides, with 100% of phytotoxicity (plant death) for all doses assessed. The herbicide imazapyr + imazapic proved to be less selective, causing the highest phytotoxicity in the species tested. The most tolerant species to the herbicides was Vicia sativa, which may be the most suitable one for phytoremediation programs in areas contaminated with imazethapyr + imazapic and imazapyr + imazapic. Seven imazapyr-tolerant mutant sugarcane plants, previously generated by in vitro mutagenesis, were studied. The imazapyr concentrations required to inhibit their acetolactate synthase (ALS basal activity) (IC 50 as μmoles acetoin h -1 mg -1 protein) were 0.77 -5.36 times greater than that of the N12 'parent'. The basal ALS activities of Mut1 and Mut6 were 1.4-fold higher than that of N12. When the mutants were sprayed with Arsenal ® GEN 2 (312 and 624 g a.i. imazapyr ha -1 ), 2 months after field planting, and evaluated 9 months later, live stalk height and number were significantly lowest in Mut2, Mut3 and the control N12. No differences in sucrose, fibre and estimated yield were observed amongst lines in untreated plots. Mutant plants germinated and grew in soil treated with the herbicide (at the lethal dose of 1248 g a.i. ha -1 ). The Mut lines tested in this study offer improved options for weed control.
