“…can be given as needed for pain control. If this is not sufficient, constant rate infusion doses can be administered using detomidine (0.006-0.0085 mg/kg bwt/h) and/or butorphanol (0.013 mg/ kg bwt/h) for more consistent pain relief (Cruz et al 2004;Sellon et al 2004). “…Alpha-2 agonists and opioids are the most common drugs used to induce neuroleptanalgesia in horses. Xylazine or detomidine combined with butorphanol, morphine or buprenorphine have been assessed for a variety of standing surgical procedures, including paranasal sinus surgery (Schumacher et al 2000), laparoscopic surgery (Latimer et al 2003;van Dijk et al 2003;Cruz et al 2004;van Hoogmoed and Galuppo 2005), flank laparatomy (Moon and Suter 1993) and long bone fractures (Russell and Maclean 2006).…”

“…Butorphanol is recommended more often than morphine for standing sedation (Schumacher et al 2000;Latimer et al 2003;Cruz et al 2004;van Hoogmoed and Galuppo 2005;Russell and Maclean 2006). Part of the reason may relate to the fact that butorphanol was not a scheduled drug when first introduced into the veterinary market, which allowed more familiarity from clinicians for butorphanol; in addition, i.v.…”
