Cardioprotective Effects of Nigella sativa Oil on Cyclosporine A‐Induced Cardiotoxicity in Rats

Abstract: Cyclosporine A is a well-known immunosuppressor agent universally used in allotransplantation. However, it has been demonstrated that this drug produces side-effects in several organs, particularly in the kidney and in the heart. Nigella sativa oil has long been used in folk medicine for a wide range of illnesses. One of the potential properties of N. sativa oil is the ability of one or more of its constituents to reduce toxicity due to its antioxidant activities. The antioxidant effects of N. sativa oil have … Show more

“…Indeed, it is used for the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, cough, fever and headaches (8). Previous studies have demonstrated that NS seed has numerous therapeutic activities, such as anti-inflammatory (9), antioxidant (5,10), immune-modulatory (11), cardioprotective (12,13) and hepatoprotective effects (14). However, the effects of NS seed on the fatigue following exercise have not yet been fully elucidated.…”

“…The previous authors [40] stated that NS oil reversed the rise of MDA levels to a large extent. This gives the explanation why NS oil prevented the lipid peroxidation due to the cyclosporine A (CsA)-induced cardiotoxic effect in rats.…”

“…In addition, NS oil has antioxidant, free radical scavenger features, antiinflammatory and antiapoptotic properties [38] . The antioxidant action of NS or TQ may also explain the protective effect of these agents against various cardiotoxic drugs [40] .…”

“…Burits and Bucar (2000) stated that in DPPH assay N. sativa possess electron donating capacity and hydroxyl radical scavenging properties. Thymoquinone, one of the active compounds of essential oil of N. sativa, not only inhibits non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation (Houghton et al, 1995) but also improves anti-oxidant enzymes status and cellular proteins oxidation process (Ebru et al, 2008). Besides thymoquinone, several compounds like carvacrol, t-anethol, 4-terpineol etc.…”
