Cardiac trauma confirmed by cardiac markers in dogs: two case reports

Abstract: Two clinical cases of cardiac contusion in dogs were studied Radiographic evaluation showed pneumothorax and alveolar pattern on diaphragmatic pulmonary lobe in one dog, and arrhythmias in both dogs. Cardiac troponin I and CK-MB serum analysis associated with clinical history and eletrocardiographic findings indicated accurately the extension of myocardial injury secondary to trauma. A avaliação … Show more

“…However, there have been few reports concerning biochemical marker assessment as a diagnostic tool for cardiac lesions associated with anesthetic drugs, as corroborated by Lopes et al 21 and Diniz et al 23 . Moreover, these authors reported that use of biochemical markers has been restricted to experimental assays, mainly in dogs.…”

“…21 In the last few years, clinical application of CK-MB assessment in dogs has been reported, mainly related to previous cardiac diseases and trauma. 22,23 However, this response is different in comparison to others species, since dogs have developed a collateral myocardium irrigation system. This parallel circulation system acts in response to coronary inflow decrease and leads to underestimationof the alteration of cardiac rhythm and serum enzyme activity, especially related to CK.…”

“…In veterinary medicine, creatine kinase (CK) serum activity is used mainly to evaluate the damages to the skeletal muscle, and in lesser extent, in cardiac alterations (AKTAS et al, 1995;SCHOBER et al, 1999;DINIZ et al, 2007). Serum CK activity is extensively studied in horses, cattle and dogs (HOFFMANN & SOLTER, 2008;STOCKHAM & SCOTT, 2008).…”
