Carbon Based Nanodots in Early Diagnosis of Cancer

Abstract: Detection of cancer at an early stage is one of the principal factors associated with successful treatment outcome. However, current diagnostic methods are not capable of making sensitive and robust cancer diagnosis. Nanotechnology based products exhibit unique physical, optical and electrical properties that can be useful in diagnosis. These nanotech-enabled diagnostic representatives have proved to be generally more capable and consistent; as they selectively accumulated in the tumor site due to their minisc… Show more

“…CQDs have contributed to improved diagnostics and treatments for various medical conditions. In neurodegenerative diseases, CQDs have been employed for early-stage diagnosis and monitoring of disease progression [85]. Moreover, CQDs have shown potential in infectious disease management, including bacterial and viral infections, by providing real-time information on disease location and response to treatment [86,87].…”

“…Carbon nitride dots (CNDs) are small biocompatible, non-toxic nanoparticles with the ability to selectively target cancer cells [ 95 ]. In addition, CNDs are fluorescent nanotools considered as an optimal candidate for cancer diagnosis [ 96 ]. Different researchers exploited properly engineered CNDs in combination with other contrast agents, such as gadolinium [ 97 ] or Fe 3+ [ 98 ], to improve their cyto-biocompatibility, to inhibit leakage or, in the case of conjugation with Fe 3+ , to improve discrimination between normal and cancerous cells [ 99 ].…”

“…In terms of hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, simplicity of manufacture, and toxicity, fluorescent CQDs outperform organic dyes. CQDs are hence regarded as excellent for cancer detection (Singh et al, 2021). Fluorescent CQDs have the potential to be employed as imaging probes.…”
