Caracterización neuropsicológica de la impulsividad funcional y disfuncional en adictos a sustancias: implicaciones clínicas

Abstract: Impulsivity is a stable correlate throughout the course of drug addiction. However, it has always been studied as a negative condition, linked to psychopathology. Dickman (1990) proposed two subdimensions of impulsivity, dysfunctional (DI) and functional (FI). He defines the latter as the tendency for rapid, goal-oriented decision-making characterized by well calculated risks. Only a few studies have attempted to differentiate between these two subdimensions using classical neuropsychological tests. Fifty two d… Show more

“…This fits with findings provided by previous studies (Bergeron et al, 2014;Edwards et al, 2013;Ouimet et al, 2013;Pedrero Pérez, 2009;Przepiorka et al, 2014;Starkey & Isler, 2016). This provides a third finding, that a person's inability to control his or her behavior, and the tendency that one has to behave aggressively influence the amount of stress that is experienced by said individual.…”

“…Understanding the motivations behind the hours and intensity of play in a problematic user will put the behavior in context and thereby facilitate the development of a treatment plan. The evaluation of type of impulsivity could also help identify players who are most at risk for developing problematic play and cognitive rehabilitation for dysfunctional impulsivity could optimize the treatment for problematic videogamers (Pedrero, Ruiz, Rojo, Llanero, & Puerta, 2012). Dysfunctional impulsivity, as seen in drug addiction, is partially reversible and corresponds to the duration of abstinence and improving associated psychosocial problems (Bankston et al, 2009;Bates, Voelbel, Buckman, Labouvie, & Barry, 2005).…”

“…[7][8][9] The most common pattern of crack consumption described in the literature is characterized by loss of control, seeking behavior (despite obvious harm to various aspects of life), intense craving, and frequent relapses. 10 These characteristics are associated with changes to neural circuits that manage behavioral processes, such as reward and conditioning behaviors;…”
