Demand for native fruits has been expanding, due to the increasing interest in foods with possible health benefits. The buriti (Mauritia flexuosa L. f.) is a native Brazilian fruit, appreciated by local populations, and its products are already on the market. This study investigated the physical characteristics and nutritional composition of buriti pulp, obtained from typical Cerrado and Amazon regions in Brazil. These regions influenced physical parameters and chemical composition. The fruits originating in the Cerrado were bigger and heavier than the ones from the Amazon. Nevertheless, protein, fatty acid and carbohydrate contents were higher in fruits from the Amazon region. The analyzed buriti fruits presented high monounsaturated fatty acid concentration (73.03 to 79.43 g/100 g), with the predominance of oleic acid (72.21 to 78.57 g/100 g). Buriti fruits may be a promising source of good nutritional quality vegetable oil and dietary fiber.Keywords: Mauritia flexuosa L. f.; nutritional value; fatty acids; minerals.Practical Application: This work showed that the region influenced the physical parameters and chemical composition of buriti grown in Amazon and Cerrado.

ResumoBactris maraja (marajá) é uma palmeira frequente nas margens de lagos e igarapés amazônicos, cujos frutos comestíveis são consumidos pelo homem e pela fauna. Os estudos morfoanatômicos das estruturas reprodutivas podem contribuir com informações que subsidiarão estudos taxonômicos, fisiológicos e ecológicos. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar características biométricas e morfoanatômicas do pirênio, bem como característi-cas histoquímicas da semente. Frutos maduros foram coletados e foram determinadas as dimensões, a massa fresca, e o teor de água, e descritas a forma, coloração e textura. O estudo anatômico foi feito pelo método de inclusão em resina. Foram aplicados testes histoquímicos para detecção dos principais metabólitos. Tanto os pirênios quanto as sementes isoladas apresentaram pequena variação biométrica, exceto para a massa fresca. O pirênio varia de obovado a elíptico, com endocarpo espesso, rígido, formado por células esclerificadas de paredes espessas. A semente é obovada depressa a elíptica, com tegumento fino, cartáceo, marrom-claro, aderido ao endocarpo, constituído de células parenquimáticas espessadas e taníferas; endosperma volumoso, sólido, homogêneo, branco, formado por células oblongas, elípticas e ovais transversalmente, e arredondadas longitudinalmente, com reserva proteica e lipídica; embrião lateral, cônico, pequeno, branco-leitoso, com conteúdo proteico e lipídico, polo radicular indiferenciado e polo caulinar com três primórdios foliares. AbstractBactris maraja (marajá) is a common palm tree at the margins of Amazonian lakes and streams, whose edible fruits are eaten by man and wildlife. Morphological and anatomical studies of reproductive structures can provide information that will subsidize taxonomic, physiological and ecological studies. The aim of this study was to determine the biometric and morphoanatomical features of the pyreneas well as histochemical characteristics of the seed. Mature fruits were collected and we measured size, fresh mass, water content and described shape, color and texture. The anatomical study was performed by resinembedding. Histochemical tests for detection of principal metabolites were applied. The pyrenes and isolated seeds showed small biometric variationexcept for fresh weight. The pyrene is obovate to elliptical, with a thick, hard, sclerified endocarp, formed by cells with thick walls. The seed is compressed obovate to elliptic, with a thin chartaceous seed coat, light brown, adhered to the endocarp composed of thickened parenchyma cells and tanniferous cells; bulky endosperm, solid, homogeneous, white, formed by oblong, elliptical and transversely oval cells, that are rounded longitudinally, with protein and lipid reserves; embryo lateral, conical, small, milky-white, with protein and lipid content, undifferentiated root pole and shoot pole with three leaf primordia.

Oxidative stress is a metabolic disorder linked with several chronic diseases, and this condition can be improved by natural antioxidants. The fruit pulp of the palm Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd. ex Mart. is widely used in the treatment of various illnesses, but as far as we know, there are no reports regarding the properties of its leaves. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of A. aculeata leaf extracts obtained with water (EA-Aa), ethanol (EE-Aa), and methanol (EM-Aa) solvents. The extracts were chemically characterized, and their antioxidant activity was assessed through the scavenging of the free radicals DPPH and ABTS. EE-Aa and EM-Aa showed the highest amounts of phenolic compounds and free radical scavenging activity. However, EA-Aa was more efficient to protect human erythrocytes against AAPH-induced hemolysis and lipid peroxidation. Thus, we further show the antioxidant effect of EA-Aa in preventing AAPH-induced protein oxidation, H2O2-induced DNA fragmentation, and ROS generation in Cos-7 cells. Increased levels of Sirt1, catalase, and activation of ERK and Nrf2 were observed in Cos-7 treated with EA-Aa. We also verify increased survival in nematodes C. elegans, when induced to the oxidative condition by Juglone. Therefore, our results showed a typical chemical composition of plants for all extracts, but the diversity of compounds presented in EA-Aa is involved in the lower toxicity and antioxidant properties provided to the macromolecules tested, proteins, DNA, and lipids. This protective effect also proven in Cos-7 and in C. elegans was probably due to the activation of the Sirt1/Nrf2 pathway. Altogether, the low toxicity and the antioxidant properties of EA-Aa showed in all the experimental models support its further use in the treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases.
