Capillary Electrophoresis of Free Fatty Acids by Indirect Ultraviolet Detection: Application to the Classification of Vegetable Oils According to Their Botanical Origin

Abstract: A method for the determination of fatty acids in vegetable oils by capillary electrophoresis with indirect UV-vis detection has been developed. The separation of fatty acids was optimized in terms of Brij surfactant nature and concentration and organic modifier (2-propanol) percentage. The optimal background electrolyte consisted of 10 mM p-hydroxybenzoate, 5 mM Tris at pH 8.8, 80 mM Brij 98, 40% acetonitrile, and 10% 2-propanol. Under these conditions, vegetable oils from five botanical origins (avocado, corn… Show more

“…A number of methods have been reported. These include GC , LC , supercritical fluid chromatography , CE , and MEKC in conjunction with a variety of detectors. A serious drawback for most of the procedures is the requirement of derivatization, which is tedious and time consuming.…”

“…The authors were able to detect FFAs within the M range in a coco oil extract. Later, a similar study was conducted using dimethyl-␤-CD for the separation of hydrolyzed crude vegetable oils [4], in which it was possible to separate C18:0, C18:1, C18:2, C18:3 ⌬ cis 6,9,12 and C18:3 ⌬ cis 6,9,15 FFAs in less than 15 min at base peak resolution. To achieve this level of performance, it was required that the injected sample volume does not exceed 4 nL.…”

“…10,11 In ancient times, the homemade production of castor oil was disseminated by Brazilian countryside families, which had low financial resources and difficulty in the access of health care, for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and laxative properties. 12 Several analytical techniques can be applied in analysis and certification of vegetable oils such as liquid chromatography, 13,14 gas chromatography, 15-17 capillary electrophoresis, 18,19 nuclear magnetic resonance, [20][21][22] and near-infrared spectroscopy. 23,24 However, in the last decade vibrational spectroscopies have been presented as an alternative, since the analysis is fast and usually the sample preparation is very simple.…”
