Capabilities-Based Forecasting Model for Innovation Development in Small-and-Medium Construction Firms (Smcfs)

Abstract: Abstract.Triggering innovation among Small-and-Medium Construction Firms (SMCFs) is of paramount importance to gear up the growth of construction firms. Thus, this study aims to develop a Capability-Based forecasting model for innovation development in SMCFs. Built on 157 questionnaires, the model was tested using partial least squares (PLS) technique of structural equation modelling (SEM). The practicality and robustness of this model was then validated by 12 experts. Findings affirm SMCFs making use of multi… Show more

“…A total of 300 questionnaires were distributed via emails, and 110 valid questionnaires were returned, yielding 36.7 per cent response rate. This is comparable to other Malaysian studies collecting data from the construction industry such as Yap and Lock (2017) – 39.6 per cent (107 responses collected) and Wang et al (2018) – 26.8 per cent (157 responses collected). Likewise, Bagaya and Song's (2016) study on construction delay factors in Burkino Faso distributed 200 questionnaires to collect 140 valid responses.…”

“…Platform GSD configured the integration of environment and human resources (Pang et al, 2019), packing the demand for local products and services, increasing the training activities so that they participate in integrating the value of services towards long-term economic stability (Giray et al, 2019),, (C. Wang et al, 2018).. As in SDL's perspective that in creating a green service-scape tourist destination rely heavily on service value co-creation activities, that the value of an innovation "is not only what is produced by the producer as output but how the producer or company can serve better" (Vargo, 2018). Service value creation is more transactional and cooperation (Ballantyne & Varey, 2018), (Tutuba et al, 2019).. GSD focuses on impact-oriented services (Colavitti, USAI, & Serra, 2018).…”

“…Dlungwana & Rwelamila (2003: 3) identified the key features of small-sized contracting firms as largely unregistered, operation in the informal sector of the economy, hardly any formal business systems, largest percentage of total contractors, and very few permanent staff, usually less than ten employees. Besides, the ownership structure is less complex (Hussain & Abdul Hadi, 2018: 21), and capabilities for innovation are relatively low (Martínez-Román, Tamayo & Gamero, 2017;Wang et al, 2018). The nature of contracts executed by small and medium-sized construction firms includes substantial maintenance works, refurbishment, and housing construction projects, which are carried out under lump-sum contract and through open tender procedure (Wasi et al, 2001).…”

“…This means that they could handle more complex construction projects to a satisfactory level of performance, as asserted by Ibrahim et al (2014). Nonetheless, the firms' equipment capacity must be improved, because construction activities are becoming complicated, complex and advanced, due to new innovations and technology (Wang et al, 2018). The average years of incorporation of the firms are estimated at 15 years and 19 years for small and medium-sized firms, respectively.…”
