Cannabis sativa is one of the oldest medicinal plants in the world. It was introduced into western medicine during the early 19th century. It contains a complex mixture of secondary metabolites, including cannabinoids and non-cannabinoid-type constituents. More than 500 compounds have been reported from C. sativa, of which 125 cannabinoids have been isolated and/or identified as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are C21 terpeno-phenolic compounds specific to Cannabis. The non-cannabinoid constituents include: non-cannabinoid phenols, flavonoids, terpenes, alkaloids and others. This review discusses the chemistry of the cannabinoids and major non-cannabinoid constituents (terpenes, non-cannabinoid phenolics, and alkaloids) with special emphasis on their chemical structures, methods of isolation, and identification.

Καί δίκαια."Ή κατανάλωση της κάνναβης αγκαλιάζει ολο καί ευρύτερα στρώματα του αμερικάνικου πληθυσμού καί ειδικότερα σπουδαστές μικροαστικής καί αστι κής προέλευσης" (Brill καί συν. 1970).,."Σαρανταδύο εκατομμύρια 'Αμερικανοί καπνίζουν μαριχουάνα καί ή κατα νάλωση της (γύρω στίς 13.000 λίμπρες τη μέρα) έχει τετραπλασιασθεϊ τά δέκα τελευταία χρόνια. Τότε αποτέλεσε έκφραση διαπροσωπικών σχέσεων καί ανταλ λαγών στά πλαίσια τής περιθωριακής ομάδας, σύμβολο αναγνώρισης μιας κοι νωνικής απόταξης καί μιας πολιτισμικής ταυτότητας δίπλα στην τζαζ, τό μπλουζ, καί τό ρεμπέτικο (Allen καί West 1968, Δαμιανάκος καί Στάθης 1976, Kaufman καί συν. 1969). Cannabis sativa L. contains more than 420 different constituents. Sixty-one of these constituents are cannabinoids. The electron voltage selected ion monitoring technique was used in the study of this unique group on natural compounds. Mass spectra of each compound were recorded at various eV settings (5.5-21 eV). The electron voltage selected ion recordings were obtained by plotting the relative intensities of characteristic fragment ions against electron voltage. The method was proven useful in the structure analysis of cannabinoids since it requires only minute quantities of sample. It was possible to recognize homologs and to differentiate positional and double bond isomers as well as cannabinoids with the same molecular weight.
