Canine Parvovirus 2c Infection in Central Portugal

Abstract: Abstract. Canine parvovirus (CPV) has been evolving, generating new genetic and antigenic variants throughout the world. This study was conducted to determine the types of CPV circulating in dogs in Figueira da Foz, Portugal. Thirty fecal samples, collected between 2006 and 2007 from dogs with clinical signs of CPV infection, were tested for CPV by a rapid, in-clinic, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)/ immunomigration test, by conventional real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and by minor-groove … Show more

“…CPV-2c causes similar clinical signs as the previously known strains, including mucoid or hemorrhagic diarrhea, leukopenia, and lymphopenia [33,40]. Although a few reports suggest that CPV-2c may cause more severe clinical signs and mortality particularly in adult dogs than type 2a and 2b, others describe less-severe disease and lower mortality rates in CPV-2c infected dogs [39].…”

“…Out of the 29 PCR positive samples, 15 were identified as CPV-2b and 14 as CPV-2a. No CPV-2 was detected [8]. The results of molecular typing by PCR assay in Brazil showed that out of the 38 isolates collected during the period from 1982 to 1995, showed that the relative prevalence of the antigenic types changed over time.…”

“…All the three cell culture isolates also generated two specific amplicons of 681 and 427 base pairs confirming them as CPV-2b. Vieira et al [8] examined 30 faecal samples from dogs with clinical signs of CPV infection for CPV diagnosis by ELISA, conventional real-time PCR, and by minor-groove binding Taqman PCR. Out of the 29 PCR positive samples, 15 were identified as CPV-2b and 14 as CPV-2a.…”

“…(2). At present, CPV-2c is broadly distributed in Italy (16), and has also been found in Spain (8), Germany, the United Kingdom (9), the United States (13), Australia (17), and Portugal (27). Although the first reports seemed to show a low pathogenicity for CPV-2c, experimental data and field observations now indicate that a more severe clinical course with higher mortality rates is associated with CPV-2c infection (10).…”
