Cancer Genomic Resources and Present Needs in the Latin American Region

Abstract: In Latin America (LA), cancer is the second leading cause of death, and little is known about the capacities and needs for the development of research in the field of cancer genomics. In order to evaluate the current capacity for and development of cancer genomics in LA, we collected the available information on genomics, including the number of next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms, the number of cancer research institutions and research groups, publications in the last 10 years, educational programs, an… Show more

“…Finally, the ultimate purpose of the LACAM study is to provide solid and detailed scientific evidence on the molecular epidemiology of HBOC in the LA population in order to improve intervention strategies, prevention and risk management for patients affected by this disease. Current national cancer plans among 14 countries in LA include secondary prevention strategies with an emphasis on prevention, early detection, and opportune treatment (55). Also, several countries in the region have national guidelines recommending genetic counseling and testing in high-risk individuals (56).…”

“…Brazil and Mexico have the highest numbers of these platforms, while Peru and Ecuador have the lowest. Furthermore, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Chile are the leading countries in terms of installed facilities, cancer genetic research groups, educational programmes in genomics and medium-impact publications in the field [61].…”
