Calf and yearling prices in California and the western United States

Abstract: This paper investigates spatial, quality and temporal factors impacting the pricing of calves and yearlings in the western United States using data from a satellite video auction and a hedonic regression framework. Results suggest that spatial price discounts received by western ranchers closely match reported shipping costs and, thus, are consistent with free-on-board pricing and competitive procurement. This study also identifies the presence of temporal price premiums, on average, for seller-offered forward… Show more

“…Grazing occurs on both private and public lands; roughly 5.7 million ha (14 million ac) of non-federal land and 7.7 million ha (19 million ac) of federal land are grazed in California [16][17][18][19]. Beef cattle are by far the most prevalent grazing animal on California rangeland [20,21]. Grazing can be used as a fire management tool, and fuel reduction through livestock grazing is a goal frequently included in management plans by state, regional, county, and local agencies [22].…”

“…These state-level data, with each dot representing 1,500 head, show the geographic dispersion of calves in the United States. 9 Although calf inventories are diffuse, and cow-calf operations are prevalent across the United States, transportation costs are substantial and economically important to cattle producers, especially those in the western and southeastern United States without proximate access to feeding and processing capacity (Blank et al 2009(Blank et al , 2016Saitone et al 2016;Zimmerman et al 2012). For example, Blank et al (2016) find that calves are discounted $0.82/cwt.…”
