Caecal lipomatosis as a cause of colic in a 9‐year‐old gelding

Abstract: Summary Lipomatosis is an uncommon cause of colic. This case report details the pre‐ and intraoperative findings of a 9‐year‐old gelding, presented with acute abdominal pain. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a massive fatty infiltrate involving an extensive portion of the base and mid‐body of the caecum. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of an infiltrative lipomatous lesion of the equine caecum.

“…In nur einer Literaturquelle wird über eine andere Form des Lipoms beim Pferd berichtet, die als infiltrative Lipomatosis charakterisiert wurde. Es handelte sich um eine großflächige fettgewebige Infiltration im Bereich von Zäkumbasis und -körper bei einem 9-jährigen Wallach, der mit akuter Kolik aufgefallen war [4]. Lipome scheinen eher ein Problem des älteren Pferdes zu sein.…”

“…In people, several types of lipomatosis are reported, based on the location and the clinical manifestations (Murphey et al, 2004). In horses, there are few case reports describing lipomatosis, affecting either small or large intestinal mesentery (de Bont et al, 2013; Henry & Yamini, 1995; Linnenkohl et al, 2013), or the musculoskeletal apparatus (Bristol & Fubini, 1984; Hammer et al, 2002; Lepage et al, 1993). In one horse, lipomatosis affecting both the colonic mesentery and the neck musculature was described (Morales Briceño et al, 2015).…”

“…In one horse, lipomatosis affecting both the colonic mesentery and the neck musculature was described (Morales Briceño et al, 2015). In three of the cases of mesenteric lipomatosis previously published, two had an unremarkable ultrasound examination (de Bont et al, 2013; Linnenkohl et al, 2013), whilst the other described ‘stacked 1–2 cm thick folds of tissue with an echogenicity similar to fat’ localised in the right caudal abdomen; however, no ultrasound images were presented (Riley et al, 2007).…”
