Bryophytes of Serra da Capivara National Park, Piauí, Brazil

Abstract: Most studies of bryophytes in Brazil have focused on the Atlantic and Amazon forests, leaving the Caatinga as the biome least bryologically studied in the country. A bryofloristic survey of Serra da Capivara National Park was undertaken to analyze species richness, the distribution of species among Brazilian biomes, and the geographic distribution of species. A total of 450 samples of 62 species were collected, representing 48 mosses, 13 hepatics, and one hornwort. The resulting species list includes 22 new re… Show more

“…Fissidentaceae was the most represented moss family in the study area. This family was also found to be highly rich for other areas of Cerrado by Castro et al (2002), Correia et al (2015), Carmo and Peralta (2016), Rios et al (2016), and Nascimento et al (2019). It is one of the largest families of mosses, occurring in both forests and open areas, from sea level to 4,700 m; it occurs in moist habitats, generally near bodies of water, on soil, rocks, logs, and the base of tree trunks.…”

“…This was followed by the work of Castro et al (2002), who recorded 22 species of mosses for Sete Cidades National Park, and Yano et al (2009), who cited 40 species for the state. Some additional information was provided by sparse and sporadic collections in some locations of the state and compiled in the catalogs by Yano (1981Yano ( , 1984Yano ( , 1989Yano ( , 1995Yano ( , 2005Yano ( , 2006 and more recently by Nascimento et al (2019), who cited 62 species from Serra da Capivara National Park.…”

“…New occurrences of bryophyte species are being constantly published around the world (Vital and Visnadi 2000;Kirmaci et al 2012;Ellis et al 2014Ellis et al , 2017Erata and Batan 2019). In Brazil, new occurrences are recorded for several phytogeographic domains (Souza et al 2017;Nascimento et al 2019;Sierra et al 2019). Currently, 1,337 species of bryophytes are known to occur in the Atlantic Forest (Costa and Peralta 2015).…”
