Brick Debris Dust as an Ecological Filler and Its Effect on the Durability of Asphalt Mix

Abstract: Brick debris is one of the main construction wastes obtained from demolition of buildings. However, this material can be successfully used in the recycling process. The purpose of the study was to determine the brick dust addition effect on asphalt surface service life. An asphalt concrete reference mix was designed for bonding layer and prepared using a Marshall compacting device. In addition, three mixes with combined lime-brick filler were prepared as well as one mix containing only brick filler. The sample… Show more

“…Modern road engineering demonstrates the necessity and high validity of using waste materials from various industries in the production of asphalt mixes [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Moreover, the change of the road traffic structure causes intensified degradation of road surfaces that results in an increased generation of RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement), the application of which as a full-value material in the production of asphalt mixes meets the principles of sustainable development as the most convenient method of its use and management [ 4 ].…”

“…One of the additives for cement composites can be the brick powder (BP) which is a construction and demolition waste (CDW). The use of construction wastes in the form of crushed or ground bricks can reduce the environmental costs that countries have to pay for depositing them [ 13 ]. In China, waste clay bricks are a major component of construction wastes, and the recycling rate of CDW is less than 10% [ 14 , 15 ].…”

“…The effect of mixture stiffness on the fatigue life of asphalt pavements was investigated [13][14][15]. Different studies were performed to assess the durability of laboratory-prepared asphalt mixtures [16][17][18]. The influence of volumetric properties on the performance of asphalt mixtures was evaluated [19][20][21][22].…”
