Brands Of Ampiclox Against Clinical Strains Of Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract: Proliferation of different brands of antibiotics including ampiclox (a notable penicillinase inactivator) was considered a relevant factor in the antibiotic resistance of Staphylococcus aureus. Consequently the antibiogram and susceptibility of 20 clinical strains and a control strain (NCTC 6571) of Staphylococcus aureus to 10 different brands of ampiclox were determined by disk diffusion and tube broth dilution methods. The control strain was found sensitive to ampicilin, augmentin R and cloxacillin in the an… Show more

“…A more worrisome potential consequence of this menace is the rising incidence of microbial resistance to ampicillin‐cloxacillin in the country. Clinical strains of Staphylococcus aureus have shown resistance to various brands of ampicillin‐cloxacillin in Nigeria 13 . A previous study noted 100% resistance of Escherichia coli to ampicillin, 14 and another study noted high resistance of same organism to cloxacillin 14 in Nigeria.…”

“…Isolates harbouring ESBL genes were subjected to R-plasmid curing experiment using the modified method described by Adeleke et al (2002). 40 Briefly, the overnight culture of each ESBL-positive P. mirabilis strains was exposed to 200 and 100 μg/ml of ethidium bromide and incubated for 24 hours at 37 0 C. Pure colonies of the ethidium bromide treated and untreated isolates were first selected on MacConkey agar plates and then on Nutrient agar, after which they were then diluted to 0.5 MacFarland standard for susceptibility testing against selected antibiotics (cefotaxime, ceftazidime, aztreonam, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin and trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole) by disc-diffusion method, and zones of inhibition interpreted by comparing with the CLSI guideline.…”

“…acquired in hospital) and dangerous human pathogen since publication of its role in sepsis by Ogston in 1880 and 1882 (Lowy, 1998). At present, Staphylococcal resistance to antibiotic has been associated with resistant plasmids (R-plasmid) that have the ability to mediate the production of drug inactivated enzymes such as -lactamase.The spread of resistance to antimicrobial agents in S. aureus is largely due to the acquisition of plasmids and or transposons (Lyon andSkurray, 1987Adeleke andOdelola, 1997;Adeleke et al, 2002 and other functions (King et al, 2006 andDiep et al, 2008).…”
