Bovine Lymphocyte Antigens (BoLA): A Serologic, Genetic and Histocompatibility Analysis

Abstract: Eleven lymphocyte antigens have been defined in cattle using 81 lymphocytotoxic sera. These sera (typing reagents) were selected from over 1,000 normal sera, 35 alloimmune sera, and 111 samples of colostrum whey. Absorptions revealed that nine of the 11 antigens detected by these reagents are serologically independent. Segregation of the genes controlling these antigens was observed among 470 calves from matings of 56 heterozygous sires and 360 dams, indicating that each of the 11 antigens is controlled by one… Show more

“…Spooner et al (1978) did provide genetic evidence for the existence of at least two linked loci but subsequently using more specific antisera they showed that their specificities were all controlled by a single locus (Oliver et al 1981). Amorena & Stone (1980) also obtained suggestive evidence for the existence of more than one locus, as 18 parents appeared to transmit 2 antigens to their offspring and on 4 occasions immunisations between identical heterozygotes produced cytotoxic antibodies. However, Amorena and Stone were reluctant to accept the existence of more than one locus until further evidence became available.…”

“…It may be, however, that the measurement of specificity breadth is too coarse for optimum value. In systems with the variability of BOLA (Amorena & Stone, 1980). considerable increase in polyspecificity could take place without in many cases producing reactivity with more than one-third of the panel animals.…”
