Botanical, Phytochemical and Pharmacological Properties of Hedychium (Zingiberaceae) – A Review

Abstract: Zingiberaceae is one of the most widely distributed plants in tropic and subtropic area, about 19 genus and 375 species weredistributed in Indonesia. Based on empirical data, some of the plants were used traditionally to treat various diseases. Nowadays, Zingiberaceae plants are extensively studied for their phytochemistry and pharmacological properties included genus Hedychium. The various bioactive compounds were isolated from these plants and they were known to have the pharmacological effect. This review s… Show more

“…Mechanism of action of phenolic compounds in killing bacterial cells is by denaturizing the protein of bacterial cells (Kusdarwati, Sari, & Mukti, 2010). Hartati, Suganda, & Fidrianny (2014) stated that the general secondary metabolites content of Zingiberaceae were flavonoids, phenols, terpenoids and essential oils. Secondary metabolites produced by Zingiberaceae are generally have ability to inhibit the growth of pathogens that harm human life, including Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and fungi such as Neurospora sp., Rhizopus sp.…”

“…Hedychium species are extensively cultivated for their various uses in fragrance, paper, ornamental, cosmetics, medicine, and food industries ( Sakhanokho and Rajasekaran, 2019 ). Hedychium plants are rich in essential oil and widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of flu, gastric diseases, diarrhea, bronchitis, asthma, nausea, snake bites, and leishmaniasis ( Tushar et al., 2010 ; Hartati et al., 2014 ; Sakhanokho and Rajasekaran, 2019 ). The extracts and essential oils of Hedychium plants have been demonstrated to have multiple bioactivities, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, cytotoxicity, anti-acetylcholinesterase, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, analgesic, hepatoprotective, and insecticidal activities ( Hartati et al., 2014 ; Ray et al., 2018a ; Tavares et al., 2020 ).…”
