Bonelike Apatite Formation Utilizing Carbon Nanotubes as Template

Abstract: Template-induced hydroxyapatite (HA) has broad prospects in the applied fields of regenerative medicine and bone repair. HA thin coatings have been deposited on vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via the high-temperature radio-frequency (rf) magnetron sputtering deposition technique. Simulated body fluid (SBF) solution has been used to soak and incubate the HA/CNTs nanocomposites at 37 degrees C. SEM, EDS, XRD, and FTIR characterizations revealed bonelike apatite formation on top of HA/CNTs… Show more

“…Both single-wall and multiwall carbon nanotubes were found to be able to interact with the biological tissues and to be useful for bone repair (Tutak et al 2009;Bhattacharya et al 2011;Joshi et al 2010;Mendes et al 2010;Niu et al 2010;Sahithi et al 2010;Tutak et al 2010). This has been well presented in the published literature and will not be further discussed here (see above references).…”

“…As the obtained hydrophilicity under plasma modification cannot meet the cellular requirements, PVA was immobilized on the surface to promote cell proliferation and vascularization. 77 In vitro Analysis In this study, the MG-63 cells were seeded on the scaffolds to investigate cell attachment. FE-SEM observations and EDX spectrum [ Figure 7] confirmed this hypothesis.…”

“…The change in surface charge after absorption of calcium ions and the change in concentration of SBF ions lead to a tendency for the absorption of phosphate ions in the SBF solution and gradually formation of HAP. 77 In vitro Analysis In this study, the MG-63 cells were seeded on the scaffolds to investigate cell attachment. In this regard, the cells were cultured on the surface of the scaffolds for 24 h and then evaluated using FE-SEM.…”

“…Given that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been used as templates for preparation of vanadium oxide nanotubes [17] , a variety of nanomaterials, such as nanotubes, nanorods, and nanowires, have been prepared with the use of CNT templates [18,19] . The average diameter of the prepared samples grown on outer wall of CNTs is dependent on the diameter of CNTs.…”
