Bone density in women with prolactinoma treated with dopamine agonists

Abstract: Based on the current ISCD criteria, bone density evaluation in women with prolactinoma reveals bone loss, especially of trabecular type. Bone density in these patients was particularly associated with the duration of amenorrhea, which reinforces the importance of the adequate disease control in women with prolactinoma in order to avoid complications of this disease.

“…In general, spinal bone mineral content is decreased by 20-30% [6,10,17,[19][20][21] while forearm bone mineral is decreased by 2.5-10% [3-6, 8, 10, 13, 17]. A few studies have used DXA to examine hipbone density which is also reduced but to a lesser extent than in the spine [18,19,[21][22][23]. The difference in bone loss between the sites is likely due to the more rapid turnover of trabecular bone.…”

“…It is well known the hyperprolactinemia associated bone loss in pre and post-menopause. [7,8,9] It seems that a direct effect of high prolactin levels on skeleton is presented independent of hypoestrogenic state. [10] The prolactinoma-osteoporosis association in a patient with history of kidney stone and associating a DXA pattern with the lowest T-score at distal radius increases the suspicion of a multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome but in our case the repeated tests ruled out this condition.…”

“…Por meio da técnica de radioimunoensaio, observou-se que os níveis séricos de PRL nem sempre coincidem com os achados clínicos, pois, devido a alterações pós-traducionais, como diamidação, glicolisação e fosforilação, há heterogeneidade na molécula de PRL circulante (Naliato et al, 2008).…”
