Bluetooth Mesh Energy Consumption: A Model

Abstract: The recent publication of the Bluetooth Mesh standard is a remarkable milestone in the evolution of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). As a new technology in the Internet of Things (IoT) market, it is crucial to investigate the performance of Bluetooth Mesh. However, while a fundamental feature of Bluetooth Mesh is its suitability for energy-constrained devices, this aspect has not yet been properly considered in the literature. In this paper, we model the current consumption, lifetime and energy cost per delivered b… Show more

“…As a result, the traffic that transits these links in 18 (a), is spread among the other links, producing a higher traffic intensity in the upper section of the mesh. Links 1-23 and [14][15][16][17][18][19] are clear examples of this. If the interference conditions of the environment are known, these results could provide valuable information regarding the mesh topology and the optimal placement of the relay nodes.…”

“…The drawbacks of using a flooding model were addressed and diverse approaches to select the devices in the network to take on the relay role were proposed in [13]. More recently, a model of the current consumption, lifetime and energy cost per delivered bit was presented in [14].…”

“…The authors in [ 39 ] provided a model to predict critical energy consumption parameters of Low Power Nodes (LPN) in Bluetooth Mesh. They developed an analytical current consumption model based on experimental measurements on real hardware.…”

“…Apart from the physics of the sensors, there have been many studies that address the problem of reducing the energy consumption of the nodes, based on low energy communications protocols, architectures and solutions [9,10,11], and on the shape of the heating pulses applied to the sensors [3,12,13,14].…”
